Trip: Manzanillo to Acapulco

A friend has asked me if I wanted to go to Acapulco. The trip sounds interesting but another friend said that it is not safe to drive the coastal highway from Manzanillo south to Zihuatanejo and then to Acapulco? Does this sound true?

My Mexican friends in Manzanillo would not let me drive down highway 200. They were full of tales of woe on that stretch of highway.

I have heard others say that they passed that way without problems, but that the road itself is a problem through the mountains south of Manzanillo. I remember one guy who said it was faster and a lot easier to take the toll roads from GDL through Morelia to Toluca to Cuernavaca and down to AC. – actually he was going the other direction.

I respected my friends’ judgment and did not drive south on 200. North of Manzanillo, 200 is fine.

Having driven that route several times, I wouldn't characterize it as "unsafe." But I would urge caution, a vehicle in good repair, plenty of planning, and not expecting to make any time on a leisurely drive through incredible scenery. Be sure and take your wits with you.

Jennifer,

In the stretch south of Manzanillo to Lazaro Cardenas do you know if there are places to stay? Looking at pictures of the area, I agree completely that the scenery must be incredible. We want to investigate that stretch of 200 so I appreciate the info.

Thanks, Nancy
