The Second Annual MexicoConnect Fantasy Winter Vacation

Can't Post |
It’s still the dead of winter, and some of you folks North of Mexico are facing some heavy-duty blizzards. (Heck, some of us down here are freezing, too.) So…..it’s time for the Second Annual Mexico Connect Fantasy Winter Vacation, with a few twists:

You have been awarded an all-expense paid 7-day, 6-night vacation at the venue of your choice within the Mexican Republic. Your lodging and transportation costs will be fully paid, and you’ll be given $1,000 USD to spend in any way you like – on victuals, nightclubs, souvenirs, arts and crafts, lessons, admissions to cultural events, lottery tickets, or the cosmetic counter at Palacio de Hierro. Now, where do you want to go, where would you like to stay….and how are you going to spend that $1,000 USD?

And for the twist on this year’s fantasy, you also have won the right to send your boss, the coworker you despise, your mother-in-law, or the bane of your existence away on an all-expense paid 7-day, 6-night sojourn at the venue of your choice within the Mexican Republic. Where’s the worst place you can imagine spending a week?

I would fly into the Cancun airport (but would only see that monstrosity from the air) and hop on the Riviera bus to Playa del Carmen, where I would stay in a little hotel in North Playa (less busy, best beaches). After spending half my time there, I would rent a car and head south of Tulum staying, most likely, at Los Lirios on the Boca Paila road, for a few days in an even slower place.

That would be my tourist ideal.

I'd send someone that I'd like to punish to downtown Acapulco. Yea, Acapulco. If he didn't get run over by a taxi in the first 5 minutes then he'd get to experience an area that looks like someone dropped a bomb and never bothered to clean up afterwards. The filthy open air cenadurias, and if he survived that, well, he may have occasion to use the public restrooms. That'll make him repent his sins....

Hmmm.. I'm either going to Tonala or Oxaca, and I'm spending my $1,000 on Mexican handicrafts and taking them back to the US and selling them on eBay and with my profits I'll be able to come back for three months!!!

The worst vacation, the vacation from hell, would have to be a continuous series of time share pitches in either PV or Cancun. Would it matter where? Those folks, and lord only knows we all have to make a living, remind of an unholy marriage of a Sunday morning cable preacher and Honest Harry's car salesmen on a bad hemroid day. The $1,000 US goes on a down payment.

Nicest - Morelia, Merida for the Castro Pecheco murals, Jalapa for the student food, Mexico City for the Archeological Museum, Beco del Rio for the pulpo, Fortin de los Flores, Trocones, Isla Mujueres [slow day and only by ferry], Mitla, Puebla for the cathedral or Talavera, Monte Alban, Uriangato for the textile shopping, Troncones, Puerto Progresso for the mariscos, PV for the bull fight [though I have done it once and will not return], Oaxaca for the Night of the Radishes, Orizaba - for the beer.

I split the $1,000 between beer, sea food, soccer stuff and a new woolen blanket in Mitla.

We tried this a couple of years ago, hoping to pay for our trip to Oaxaca. Forget selling on eBay. You won't make a dime on your Mexican products. You can pretty well guess the decor of our house since then!
