Texas warns of travel to Mexican border town for the Fourth

Can't Post | Private Reply
CNN) -- Texas authorities are urging residents not to cross into the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo during the Fourth of July weekend because of intelligence that a Mexican drug cartel plans to target U.S. citizens.
The violent Zetas drug cartel, which operates in Nuevo Laredo, will be targeting crimes at Americans who cross the border into the city this weekend, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Webb County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

I had seen that article too, Rolly. I doubt the Zetas are stupid enough to bring even more pressure down on themselves by targeting Americans--not to mention that such behavior would be pretty unusual for a cartel in any case. While I'm seldom a conspiracy theorist, I wonder whether Texas would just as soon see people spend their 4th of July party money at home.

Funny, after the way I was treated a couple of tome at airports in Texas I will not fly through there anymore. I now will pay more money to go home from DF rather than go through US airports , Dallas is off my list for ever...

Yes, it would seem counter productive for them to attack their own customers.......

Bob,
How very true, Texans are not well known for being circumspect about their behavior. Confidence and pride often dominate Texan attitudes. Soul searching is not exactly woven into Texas' psyche.

How clever. Actually the day tourist industry which had historically been a staple of the Nuevo Laredo economy died six years ago during the Gulf-Sinaloa war and has never recovered. The only US citizens/residents who cross now in any appreciable numbers are the paisanos returning home for summer vacations. It is an odd warning, but probably based on some difficult to verify "intelligence source" and issued as a CYA measure. There have been similar warnings in the past and they did not pan out. This is a news story because the situation in Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon has only recently started receiving international attention.

I live in NL and don't plan to take any special precautions. We are always on guard though because you can never predict when or where something is going to happen. As one poster mentioned there would be no reason for the Zetas to stir things up in Nuevo Laredo since they are already firmly in control of the city. If they were going to do something like this I would expect it to be in Monterrey, Reynosa or Matamoros where there are ongoing battles with the Gulf cartel.

I think my mind must be beginning to blur about this. I thought I had read, and seen pictures of, narcomantas that have recently been hung in NL. My Spanish is pretty good and I took them to mean threats of violence against the gringo DEA agents. "We know who you are, where you are" blah, blah, blah. I think someone from the Texas DPS extrapolated this to be a threat against ALL Americans. I could be wrong..it wouldn't be the first time.

If DPS interpreted the threat against DEA agents as a warning for Nuevo Laredo, they have their geography screwed up. The only threat that I have found on the news came out of Chihuahua - article in English:

Altahabana would know more about this than I would, but it seems that the border county sheriffs have had a financial interest in over-blown predictions of impending doom. As does the Texas Department of Public Safety (and the Governor, who is trying to sell himself nationally to a right-wing audience as a potential presidential candidate).

I remember the previous sheriff in Webb County, Rick Flores, was making himself a national figure this way, doing the same sort of thing... taking a relatively obvious threat (like to DEA agents) and making it a generic, "we're all gonna die (if I don't get more money)" talking point.

I think you are mostly correct but may have only touched the iceberg. There are many, many people who have a financial interest ( in the U.S.) in this drug war and the impending doom. From city, county, state and federal law enforcement and there are those in private industry who profit also. From city mayors to newspapers to web pages to gun dealers, people are profiting from the blood. Nothing new here, that has been a fact of life for a long time.
As far as "Good Hair" Perry, I see where the Texas Senate passed a law keeping his travels secret...for 18 months after the fact. What a state.

The message from the US Consulate last night. Of course this is the same consulate that said nothing when the cartels said that Americans would be viable targets from now on... several months ago.

The warden's message was passing along the DPS warning. It did not receive information from a separate source.
