Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit via Internet

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello All,

This morning January 28th 2011 I was shocked wide awake by receiving the following e mail from Banjercito in Mexico. I returned this vehicle in November of 2010 and canceled the permit at the border as required. I thought that was it. Has anybody else ever received this notice? Note the underlined portions. [It should be noted that this email came in both Spansh and English. Therefore the translation is NOT mine but the official office translation.] As ever, jerezano

Surprised they didn't ask for that before hand ... rather than after the fact

Mexico? - don't try to figure it out. It looks very official although a bit onerous in what it requests you send. They very selectively go to great depths and lengths and totally ignore other areas, there is no rhyme or reason or method to their madness.

When you get the permit online, you are still obligated to satisfy all the documentation required and somewhere in the process it says that and gives an email address to email it and a physical address to postal mail it.

I've been getting permits online the last 4 years and received that email last January 2010. Somewhere on these forums is a thread where I posted about it and the followup. I was worried it was going to be a tedious process with delays and "lost" emails. The short story is that I emailed all the docs (I had scanned them previously) and just two days later I received a reply saying that was all they needed and I was now clear to get another permit. And a few days after that I did get anotehr permit online with no problems. Just a few weeks ago I emailed the docs for the most recent permit and got a reply the next day saying I was all good.

So my point is don't worry about it, just send in the docs. They seem to be handling things promptly and accurately.

I received a year ago almost the same email, requesting exactly the same docs. I see nothing arbitrary or inconsistent about it.

Well, first, if the sticker is turned in and properly removed from the system, there would be no need for followup documentation, you're making work, that's inefficient. As I've stated many times I never turn mine in when leaving and when returning no one ever notices or asks, I'd call that inconsistent. So, what's the purpose of this? - that qualifies as arbitrary.

I dont see how you could possibly obtain another TIP when you have one that is outstanding. It is not up to the clerk at the border. Your passport # and name are in a database. If you apply for a new permit the computer will print out a form showing the data on the outstanding vehicle. Something is amiss with your post.

Aw Steve, you've been around long enough to know that logic is not a requirement for bureaucratic rules.

Steve, when you apply for the permit online you are told you need to send in the supporting docs. While it may seem like inefficient work to require this even after the permit has been canceled, they are simply asking that you live up to the agreement that you made. If they didn't then nobody would ever bother. Nothing arbitrary there.

As for leaving without turning it in and then coming back, unless you bring it to their attention how exactly are they supposed to "notice"? I don't think they have scanners on the bridges to let them know when a permit has left the country and they don't check for car permits coming in at the border (permit not even required in the border zone) so how would they know?

For four years I have used the online permits and the web address and the forms and the requirements haven't changed a nickel's worth. The process has remained exactly the same. The online permit group may be the most consistent and efficient department in Mexico and we could only dream that other departments in Mexico could operate the same.

Give them time to merge the online database with the actual crossing the border database

This is the first year that we applied and received our car permit on line.
And like the person that is posing the question here we received the same additional material to be submitted.
We have checked it out through the best legal source available here and feel its all legitimate .

That said in talking to our other friends here some of them state if you hold a FM3 status you are unable to get your permit on line, is that true?

jerezano, thanks for posting cuz I'm in the same situation, but haven't yet received a similar email. I obtained a TIP via the internet and later canceled it at the border. I got lazy and didn't email Banjercito the requisite copies of documents, even though I have them as a PDF file on my hard drive - stupid me!. I was wondering if they would notice. Now I know! I've obtained TIPs at the MX Consulate in Los Angeles and via the internet numerous times before. At the consulate, you're required to supply the documents when obtaining the TIP. Online, you agree to email them as a condition of obtaining the TIP via the internet - which I've always done before. As someone mentioned, Banjercito is among the most efficient, well-run MX governmental agencies. Guess I'll await their email request, then reply so they can easily match everything up. If I don't receive an email soon (I too canceled my permit in November), I'll send them the documents along with a copy of the receipt they gave me at the border upon cancellation. These forum sure do help. Thanks again!

That is not true. If they were not able to get permits on-line, it was for some other reason. I know people who have FM3s and have gotten their permits on-line.
