Taking a dog on the bus?

Can't Post | Private Reply
When I lived in Mexico 2009-2010 I asked several folks about the possibility of taking my miniature schnauzer on the buses and got lots of different answers. When I go to Mexico this time I'd like to not even bring a vehicle and travel entirely on the bus. I'm thinking of getting one of those dog carriers that looks like a shoulder bag. Anyone use the bus system with a pet? What do y'all think? Thanks!

It may depend on the area, and on the bus driver. I have seen small dogs on the city bus in Puerto Vallarta.

On intercity buses (I assume what you are asking about), the answer is almost always NO.

I have always been told no. on log distance buses. I think I saw some baby chihuahua once on a luxury bus but I do not think the driver knew the dog was on board and the bus was almost empty. I also saw a tiny one once on a bus in Ajijic but I have never seen anything bigger than a tiny chichuahua on a bus.
Cab drivers as a rule say no but I am sure there are exceptions for good tips.

On the bus that runs from Catemaco to Acayucan I watched as the bus driver pulled over and a medium size dog came aboard and sat down beside the driver. A ways further on he stopped and the dog departed. This is why I love Mexico.

How did the dog pay the fare? Most of the dogs I know don't have pockets to carry change...although plenty of Mexican dogs are smart enough to make change!

Maybe it was a one time deal, but we boarded the bus in Barra for Villa Obregon with our Border Collie. The driver said no problem and wouldn't take the fare for the dog. Said dogs ride free. He was in a good mood, loud music, singing. It was contagious, everybody got in a good mood and was cutting up. Heard one couple say they should have gotten off earlier but was having too much fun. Party bus.

There are lots of exceptions afterall it would not be Mexico and there were not any, Unfortunately the inconsistency makes it very difficult to plan anything. I know that on the long distance buses I have never been told it was ok although I did see a tiny dog once.
