South Dakota Plates

Can't Post | Private Reply
I was wondering if anyone actually followed up, and ordered or obtained South Dakota Plates, after the recent discussion here a few weeks ago. (including obtaining the drivers license or not) I would be interested in reading any follow-ups.

Yes a friend of ours used this service and the material came to our Mexico address. He was very pleased. This is the second person we know that has SD plates now.

How is the adress handled? Does South Dakota just take any old adress or must there be a South Dakota adress?

Here's a site which may help.
http://www.state.sd.us/...e/title/register.htm

It seems pretty clear to me that you must claim residence in some county of SD.

After reading parts of the site it was not entirely clear to me as to my original question. However, I did find the following snippet, but I am not sure about it, not being a lawyer, or legally inclined.

"Any person who is an owner of a motor vehicle, motorcycle, truck tractor, road tractor, trailer, semitrailer, or recreational vehicle or trailer, who is required to apply for registration under chapter 32-3, 32-5, 32-5B, 32-9, or 32-10, and whose legal residence or chief place of business is outside the state, shall submit an application, a copy of a valid title or registration from another jurisdiction and payment of all applicable fees to the department. Upon receipt of such information, the department shall issue a nonnegotiable interstate title. A nonnegotiable title is not a valid legal document for any purpose or transaction except to make application for yearly South Dakota registration. The nonnegotiable title is valid as long as title ownership remains the same. A violation of this section is a Class 2 misdemeanor."

Could this be the section of their motor vehicle law that enables someone from out of state, with an out of state adress,to obtain South Dakota Plates? Again, if there is anyone with experince in this matter could they please elaborate? Thankyou.

My friend who ordered his license and plates used his MBE address which is Laredo, Texas. It seems that the tax collectors may have different rules in their respective counties. If you are really interested I would suggest you call the county I mentioned in the earlier post and ask them your questions.

Please mention the county again, since I do not look forward to travelling 1300 miles back to Phoenix, Az for emissions on my 1992 diesel pickup.

I too am looking for a more reasonable state. Arizona laws are too burdensome.

For anyone that wants to purchase a USA license plate you might want to consider South Dakota plates. They do not require a "local" address or insurance. It can all be done by mail and 1 telephone call. You would call 605 677 7123 which is the office of the Clay County Treasurer. His address is 211 W. Main Street, Suite 201, Vermillion, SD 57069. They will tell you what it costs and what to do. You will then go to http://www.state.sd.us/drr2/forms/motorvehicleforms.htm where you can get the forms downloaded to you. You follow the instructions from SD and those on the forms. You mail the completed forms with a check to SD and after a while your tag comes in the mail.

You might also check with the State of AZ and ask if they have offer the same option as the State of Washington (where we too have emission testing). In Washington state you can file a document with the Dept. of Licensing and declare that the vehicle is "out of state". You still pay for the tags each year (about $32 usd) but you are not required to "test". The only requirement is that when you bring the car back into the state that you go in for emission testing ASAP.

When I asked if this would cover a vehicle out of the country???? They did not care. Just give them the check and they seemed happy!!!!

Anyway that is an option if you have an address in a home state as do and plan to leave a vehicle in MX.
