Shipping gifts to Ajijic

I would like to mail a birthday gift from the USA to a friend in Ajijic. It occurs to me that immigration will insist on being involved. Any useful info would be greatly appreciated.

Immigration will not be interested, but customs surely will be. Anything of value shipped to Mexico is subject to review by customs and may (probably will) be assed a duty. Things that would be free if brought in person are subject to duty when shipped, so be careful what you send lest your friend be stuck.

And stuck bigtime: a friend here received a box from his mother with a pair of blue jeans and was charged $52USD duty. Another friend received a box containing 2 towels, 2 pot holders, and a pound of candy--and was charged $30USD duty.

The bottom line is, bring a belated present when you come--don't ship him something. He'll have to pay for it.

I learned about shipping gifts to Mexico the hard way. While visiting a small community in 2001 I was introduced to some children in an orphanage there, as Xmas approached I wanted to send them gifts. At that time there were only 13 boys. I sent school supplies and soccer socks and a couple of soccer balls. Most of the items were on sale. When the box got there the custom charge was $75 us dollars. The bar codes were used to determine the value of the items. I also declared too much value. Lesson I- You can not insure your gifts going into Mexico, so do not over estimate the value, Lesson II- cut the bar codes off and any other price that may reflect more than you paid for it. I have sent several packages since then, I declare 0/value/donation. Last xmas the box got much bigger because the orphanage has grown to 29 boys and the customs charge was 15 us dollars. Rule of thumb there is 0 or minimal custom charge on used or donated items. David while some of this info may not address your particular question about a gift to an individual, it should help minimize the rath of customs in general. Lesson III - I have heard stories of packages"lost in space" and never arriving to its destination, so only send gifts that can be replaced or lived without.Personally I have never had any trouble and everything arrives in tact and accounted for. In my case the chance of at the package not getting there is worth the joy it brings when it does.

It seems likely that you are responding to my post; although, my name is Jim. I may attempt to send a package at some point, but for now I will let one of my friends in Ajijic buy the gift locally for me and give it to my other friend. The friend doing the purchasing for me happens to be the proprietor of Hotel Casa Blanca ... he'll be able to charge the gift to the credit card I used while staying there in March.

My aunt sent me a dress that no longer fit her, though I said I didn't want it. I knew it wouldn't fit me either--she's a foot shorter than me for starters, and 22 years older in style consciousness. When it came, the duty was 320 pesos. To mail it back to her cost 150 pesos. All that for something I didn't want in the first place. So used stuff sent across the border may carry a big price tag, too.

Hello Jim, My apologies for calling you David. This was the first time I have used the forum, and a new computor user to boot, so I needed some help from David to get me going in the right direction. I guess I had him in mind. At any rate it sounds like you've come up with a good solution, and I am sure your friend will appreciate the effort and research of the best way to get the gift to him. It always helps "to know someone" doesn't it,even in Mexico, or maybe especially in Mexico. Helen

Do not worry about having my name wrong. I just wanted to clear it up. I have another question for which I do not know how to find the correct forum. I have a major dread of going through the border crossing process. I plan to pack my SUV with a small trailer and drive to Ajijic. I will sell all my furniture and many other things. Does anyone know of a service that will take my stuff through customs? I want to drive to the border, hand over the vehicle to someone who will take it through customs and then drive the rest of the way to Ajijic. Or maybe you can suggest a better forum for this question.

Hi Jim: I think what you might want is a customs broker who handles small loads and there don't seem to be that many of them around. I got one on a referral from a friend but he's in Pharr, Texas and you may not want to cross that far south. On the other hand, maybe he has some contacts in Laredo or wherever you plan to cross and can refer you to someone there. If you want to give it a try let me know and I'll send you his specs. He speaks very good English. Regards, Miguelito

Thanks, Miguelito. In fact, I am probably going to drive to Missouri to visit family on the way to Mexico. Texas could be a good place for me to cross. Please send the info. -Jim
