Sending packages out of Mexico (Ajijic)

I have read quite a bit about receiving mail and packages, but what about sending packages - excluding Mail Boxes etc., Fed Ex and UPS.

I noticed in Barbara's Bazar (Ajijic) they send letters but I don't know if they have a service for sending a small package, such as a book, for example.

If you want to avoid the big-boys (DHL, FedEx, UPS etc) then sending packages out of Mexico can be handled by the Mexican state postal service at your local 'Correos' although I think they are still using donkeys to get to the international hub in D.F. then carrier pigeons to your final destination...prices are reasonable though.

'Mexpost' is an private express service found in some Correos but they do not handle 'breakable items' in small packages - no matter how well packed! They won't tell you what a breakable item is or how much your package will cost to send until you go there and speak with them F2F.

'MexExpress' is another private carrier that is reasnoably priced. I have sent my digital camera from Tampico to New Jersey for MN$300, fully insured. Ther service took 3 days. I also sent a 2Kg package to the UK for MN$580 and that took just 3 days as well.

One hears horror stories about the state postal service with things going astray and their transit times are god-awfully slow. 7 weeks by airmail from Japan, 5 weeks from Germany, 3 weeks from Mexico DF to Tampico!! 2 weeks from Cd.Victoria to Tampico (a 2 hour drive away for pete's sake!). I could understand this if we lived in a 1 horse pueblito on the wrong side of the Baja, but Tampico is a fairly important northern provincial city - home of a major shipping port and a big chunk of the oil industry.

<sigh>
Guess I may as well wait until we make the next trip to McAllen on 'el otro lado' and use the USPS again.
