I filled a prescription for eye drops at the Ajijic Walmart last Friday. The girl couldn't find a generic version. Cost almost 230 pesos for 5ml. Ouch. I was running out, so I went back Monday to get more and again asked for generic version, and the older employee found it. Cost 40 pesos. Now that's what I call savings. ....and lack of employee training, perhaps?

So here I am, against the "Walmarting" of Mexico in theory, but bringing them my dinero anyway. Hypocrisy in action.

I happen to be a great customer fan of Farmacias Similares. They, too, have a long list of drugs and comparison prices available in a take-home brochure on the counter of each store. The list gives several names, including the generic one(s), for each drug and price comparisons. I would bet they are less than the WalMart equivalents.

We used to buy Captopril (BP medication) at our local Soriana for about $24.00 US per month (30 25-mg tablets)and thought we were getting a bargain. Then we found the same thing at "Dr. Simi's" for 25 pesos. If we buy on Mondays, we get a special discount and can buy 5 bottles for 100 pesos. I cannot recommend Farmacias Similares enough. Plus there is a real doctor on premises for basic medical problems and/or minor emergencies.

FYI, "Dr. Simi" is the adorable oversized cartoon character/puppet who waves and dances in front of your local Farmacia Siimilares.

On the one med I have really shopped of late, and a simple one at that: I paid less at two Walmarts, and it was 40% saved, compared to Similares. The box is a different color and marked Medi-mart printed on the carton I wish they would supply the larger dose sizes but that has been hard to get, if at all.

I should have mentioned in my previous post that we have no Walmart in Cd. Acuna so I have no other basis for comparison.
Similares is the very best I can do from where I live and I am well pleased with it.

There is a list online of names for US/Canadian/Mexican drugs--but I don't see the one you are looking for:

Actually it is there (near the bottom), listed as Detrusitol as the Brand and Tolterodina, L-Tertrato in the Generic form.

Maybe this site will be of some help....
