Roadside memorials

I found this an interesting article on roadside memorials after seeing so many in Mexico. Especially the tolerance or lack of up north.

About 5 years ago a teenage latina girl was shot in a car a few blocks from where I live next to a 7-11. This was the result of some name calling between people in two cars. Ever since someone (in the family I assume) has put up a memorial to the girl at various times of the year. I just noticed the new Christmas wreath with her picture.

It's quite moving, a lesson to others ... and I'm glad it's tolerated here.

Some of those memorials are quite elaborate, no? Along highway 200 they are anyway, little mausoleum looking constructs. "Viven mejor muertos que vivos."(They are living in a nicer house dead than when they were alive!)

Yes along 200, hyway 80, around Taxco and most narrow winding roads in Mexico. Don't know if they do the same for deaths other than those in hyway accidents. The exception would be for fishermen along the coast like the one here on the beach north of La Manzanilla.
