Mexico City, Mexico (CNN) -- Five presumed drug gang members and one soldier were killed in shootouts Thursday and Friday after criminals blocked thoroughfares in two northern Mexico states to prevent military reinforcements from arriving, authorities said.

Purportedly, the law enforcement authorities did not respond to the incident near the toll booth immediately because they did not want to engage in a firestorm of bullets which would have certainly resulted in civilian casualties since there were so many of them in the area. The backup of vehicles was at least five miles long. Investigators are still attempting to discern the reasons behind the blocking of the highways.
