Reasonable Amount to Carry

Can't Post | Private Reply
What is a reasonable amount of money to take with you on your first trip into the country - with the intend of staying there?

I am one person and one dog (he never asks for money).

I have rented a place for 3 months and that is already paid for.

So, what should I take with me? And in what format (s) - cash, money orders, travelers checks, etc.?

For cash, what denomination of bills should I carry for easy exhange?

Should I set up a local Bank Account as soon as I get there? My bank here in the US is Bank of America. Which Mexican bank works best with BofA?

Any other money-related tips considering the fact that I am driving via car?

I would take $100 to $150 US dollars and put them away somewhere as an emergency fund. Make sure the bills are no larger than a $20 and have no rips or tears on them, torn money is very difficult to impossible to use here. Once you cross the border, go to an ATM and use your debit card to get pesos. You'll get a good exchange rate though BofA may add a service charge, some banks do now. There are ATM's everywhere, just take out enough money for your expenses when you need it. I usually get $3000 pesos at a time as some banks have limits on how much they will dispense.

Don't bring travelers checks as they are difficult to cash and usually get you a bad exchange rate. Also forget money orders. If necessary, you can always exchange US currency at a money changer or at a bank. But I've rarely had to use my US slush fund, I still keep one just in case. It's also convenient to bring US stamps if you may want to mail something in the states, usually you can get someone who is flying back to take your envelopes and mail them at the airport for you. It's a little harder since 9/11 but I usually leave the envelope open and show them the contents before sealing it.

If you are only here for 3 months, you don't need a Mexican bank account and you can't get one anyway on a tourist visa. You can do most transactions at your US bank online. Just set up your online banking before you leave the US and make sure you understand how to do it. Also set up any recurring bills for payment online, it is the simplest way.

Have fun,

When possible, use your B of A card at Serfin bank because you will not have to pay a transaction fee, and you will get the best exchange rate. B of A is a part owner of Serfin. B of A issues both an ATM and a check card. Bring them both in case something happens to one of them.

I have rented a place for only 3 months - just to get me bearings and see where I would like to live - full time. I hate to say “forever” because things change nothing is forever (what do they say - death & taxes. They forgot getting old).

In that light, I should establish a bank account. Do you agree?

And, Rolly - I have only one card from B of A. It is a Debit Card and I use it at ATMs or for purchases. I consider it to be a Check Card. Are there really two different ones and if there are - why would I want both?

The banking rules in Mexico say that if a card is retained by an ATM for any reason, the card will not be returned. The bank is required to destroy the card. So if you have only one card, you could have a problem. I have been using ATMs here for 4 years and have never had a problem, but I have seen a couple of posts here from folks who lost their cards.

Check with your BofA branch about getting an ATM-only card. I though everyone had both cards. I was sent both without having to ask.

Because if anyone gets your check card number and the three digits off the back then they can have a spending spree at your expense.

The ATM cards are only good at ATMs and can not be used like a debit/credit card.

Bank of America issues both, it would be wise of you to go visit your local branch, explain that you will be in Mexico and ensure they will process your transactions from Mexico.

Interesting Points

Thanks Rolly & HHERRINGTON - I will be at the B of A tomorrow afternoon and request an ATM (Only) Card. I will not get it before I leave on Tuesday but I can have it forwarded to me.

I have been on this site a little more than a month (just had my auto-renewal) and the information here has been just great.

I am sure having access to this site will be even more useful once I am in Mexico.

David asked me if I wanted to do the annual sub - & come the first of April, that is just what I will do.

I have had no calls from the Consulate in Miami yesterday or today so I am hoping my Menaje de Casa was OK (they said they would call me if there were any problems). We shall see early tomorrow - I will be there at 8AM, when they open, to pick it up.

Should not be a problem about getting your ATM card, insist on more then one however. When I got my cards it was a matter of minutes.

I have, like you, a debit/check card and a separate BankOfAmerica Visa card. I have yet to use the latter and use the former every week to withdraw from an ATM. I have spotted the ATM's that are swipe machines and not ones that physically take your card into the machine and then spit it back out again.

Re: ATM Only

As per the suggestions here, I went to the Bank of America today and ordered an ATM Only card. It will catch up with me as quickly as the mail does :)

The guy at the bank thought they had stopped doing those cards - but there it was, available on his computer when he looked it up.

I also picked up the 3 copies of my approved Menaje de Casa today. I am another step closer.
