Rate the rentals

What does anyone think of this idea: a forum strictly devoted to rentals?

What I have in mind is an exchange of information on good and bad landlords and maybe even a place to advertise places available and places wanted. Even if David charged extra for this kind of service, I think it might be worthwhile.

And how about some reviews of restaurants (and even food carts)? Wouldn't that be worth a separate forum? I know of a couple of places in San Miguel de Allende that serve pretty good fare at a decent price and I know of a terrific gringo bakery, but I have yet to find on any cart here a taco that is worth crossing the street for.

It would be nice to have something other than the Lonely Planet Guide for finding decent eats whenever I travel.

Restaurant and rentals information is essentially of local interest only, and the best places for posting such information are therefore the existing regional forums. In this case, the San Miguel forum would seem to be the ideal place...

But why wade through all the other messages to get to rental (or buying) information? Also, there is no regional forum for Oaxaca. What if I want to visit there and would like to get a great meal? Isn't that kind of exchange what these forums are for?

Learn to use the search function, and use it.

MexicoConnect has a great deal of content other than its fora. You've said you're interested in Oaxaca. Did you know that there's a resource page specially dedicated to Oaxaca? http://www.mexconnected.com/...aca/oaxacaindex.html How might one find those destination indices? Simply go to MexicoConnect's home page http://www.mexconnected.com/, scroll down and look at the lower left-hand side.

Maybe there's not enough information there for your needs, and you're still looking for a great Thai restaurant in Oaxaca. Post a query to the Travel Forum, and ask there. Someone may have the answer. Let's say that you'd like to post your opinion and solicit others' about the best taco in all of Mexico. Post at the General Forum or the Living, Working & Retiring Forum. The Mexican Kitchen is another venue for food-related questions. It's that easy.

Are you looking for the name of a real estate agent in Tabasco? Ask at the General Forum or the Living, Working & Retiring Forum.

I'm with Tony on this one. A rental forum isn't appropriate for a site devoted to an entire country. (Unless, of course, there's a companion landlords' forum, where landlords could rate tenants. Just kidding, folks.)

There's also the libel factor and David doesn't need a lawsuit! When those not educated in the nuances of the law start writing putdowns of specific businesses and landlords, it would be very easy to slip over the line into libel. I know one nasty landlord in San Miguel who would be the first to be blasted for his personal traits, and he would be the first to retaliate with a lawsuit.

I think these sorts of comments need to be made in personal e-mail, whch is not totally safe from lawsuits but at least then the person making the charges would be the one to be sued, if somehow the person libeled got wind of the comments and paid a computer expert to track the e-mail down.

If you have a question about a specific landlord or rental property, you could post a more generic kind of question on the area forum and ask for personal replies to your own e-mail.

Carol Schmidt, whose last journalism classroom libel law lecture was many, many years ago, but the fear of lawsuits still lingers
