Proper Dress??

Can't Post | Private Reply
I ask this only because I was reading a book about Costa Rica last month and it is not considered proper to wear SHORTS in Costa Rica.

Are there any "dress" rules in Mexico to know, so as not offend anyone?

I live in shorts & T-shirts 85-90% of the time.

It depends where you are. Here in Ajijic, there are a few who dress in T-shirts and shorts where-ever they go. They are usually the new tourist. With time they tend to change their dress habits and wear more traditional clothing.

I suspect that in PV and other coastal cities, wearing shorts and a T-shirt is more acceptable

Shorts and "T" shirts are very common in my area in the summer. Most men do not wear short shorts, mostly knee or longer. I've seen several in the past week -- summer is on its way.

Even here in Mazatlan, if you are not at the beach, long pants are usually worn by people over 20 years old. A Mexican friend of mine commented on a mutual gringo friend's pants the other day. We all are brutal with each other so it wasn't mean but she said to him: "With those short pants you look like you should be going to kinder-school!"

Here in PV shorts are completely acceptable day or evening in most places. The majority of Mexican men do wear longer shorts than Americans, however, are more prone to wearing long pants. The majority of Mexican women to do wear shorts very much in the city. In the evening, while shorts would be acceptaable attire closer to the beach, the further you get in to el centro, casual slacks would be the best way to go.

Ah, you know spring’s on its way when we have the annual MexicoConnect shorts debate! Do a search on “shorts,” and you’ll find even more.

It all depends. Upon your age, your physique, where you are, and what you’re doing.

In Morelia, shorts are best left to those with great legs under the age of 25. Beyond that, shorts are best left to the tennis court, jogging, and working in the yard. Oh sure, there’s the occasional hefty tourist wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and a camera around his neck, but we snicker at him. We do make a special allowance for one very mature fellow who is actually a serious hiker, clad almost year-round in walking shorts, knee socks and hiking boots http://www.mexconnect.com/...enstaedtmorelia.html, but he’s earned the right. And he has the sense to wear long pants when he goes down the hill.

Jennifer, you'll be thrilled to know that I probably won't be buying any more shorts (my sickness last summer resulted in a huge weight loss) because I'm finding the light muslin clam digger length pants much more comfortable and cool. The local boutiques have them in all colors, mostly unisize, with elastic waists, and they're not as binding and hot as my previous denim or chino Bermuda shorts.

And there just might be a tiny bit of feeling more at ease in longer pants here, now that I've seen for two winters how ridiculous gringo tourists look arriving here in shorts and tank tops when it's 65 by day, 30 at night, and the residents are bundled in jackets and gloves. I may change my mind when it hits 100 F in April and May, and some of those clam diggers might lose a few inches off the bottom.

There are Mexicans even of my age, male and female, who do wear shorts in the summer, but nothing like back in Phoenix. We're not a beach town, which makes a difference. Norma and I still say to each other when we see a young Mexican woman in a tiny, tiny miniskirt, stiletto heels, and a backless top showing her bellybutton, "At least she's not wearing shorts."

I think this is my fourth posting on this same topic the past two years. It comes up almost as often as "We're thinking about moving to Mexico. Where should we move?" and "Can I live like a king in Mexico on $500 a month?"

If a backless top shows off the bellybutton does it a appear to be an outtie from the back?

You guys really scared me for a minute. I'm almost all packed to head for PVR Friday and the only long pants I was planning on was the jeans I will wear down there and back since it's freezing in Colorado. Ya spose I better pack more long ones?

Your question was: "was it proper to wear shorts....."

You have total freedom to wear anything you want, although, you may run into some nightclubs or restaurants with a dresscode. If you don't mind looking like a geeky tourist who doesn't understand the culture don't take any long pants at all!

I don't mind looking like a geeky tourist or "terrorist" whatever they call me, because that is what I will be. One of those US Gringos invading Mexico for fun and sun. I'll worry about the long pants after I move down there.

I am a geeky tourist and would never pretend otherwise. If I like it, I wear it. I did get a lot of stares hiking to Punta Sam when only the locals were up at 6 AM in my shorts heavy red socks and rock hoppers. But then I would still be hiking at 6 PM and care less for fashion and accessories.

However, I will admit that I have not seen anyone wearing short pants outdoors here in Ottawa for the last four months.

Did a tour this month of UNAM, UDLA - Puebla and ITESM - CCV. Trying to do a type of physical anthropology/culture based on clothing styles. I used the university I still atend part-time in Ottawa, Ontario as a the unit of comparison. UNAM - more conservative than Carleton [i.e. at Carleton the students in residence can wear shorts and commute to classes through the tunnels - so they do] no shorts at UNAM, no exposed body peircing or tattooing, no hair dyed blue or green, no pastels with electric pinks with tartan with Beck [at the same time on one person]; and the occaisional commerce student [power glasses, briefcase, suit or expensive watch and outfit versus [there were a few of these in the soccer sub-species in Mexico] the jock/slob in sweats, beat-up sneakers and team cap on backwards. UDLA - Puebla ... could have been at home. In July the situation would be very similar. ITESM - somewhat more conservative dressing then home, but blue hair and Bono glasses. Thus, half way between UNAM and Puebla. These are rather gross exaggerations, but are my personal reflections. As an under-grad I considered myself in the lumberjack chique category. Even got called "grizzly"; so what I know for sure is debatable.

Regards, Michael in Ottawa

A person can wear anything they want at anytime unless there is some kind of dress code...such as in certain restaurants etc. I can dig that. You can be overdressed, underdressed, dressed to kill, cfm dressed or whatever. How you dress is merely an extension of who you are. It's all a costume party! I was merely giving my opinion of what I'd consider proper attire according to what I perceive as being respectful and with the intention of attaining respect. Some people could care less about what others think of them. In my life, I've found that one's manner of chosing clothing really does make a difference. Maybe for others it doesn't. However, when this person posted the question, I answered in good faith, honestly and with good intentions. I still contend, after living in Mexico for 4 years, dressing properly makes a difference. How you take that is up to you.

I asked it in the beginning only because of something I read about not shorts in Costa Rica.

We have enough responses about Mexico.

Let's drop it & move on to another thread :)

I recall, must have been about 6 years ago, I was wandering around Plaza Rio shopping center wearing what might be called running shorts. I noticed puzzled looks from various people and I was thinking "geez, have they never seen an American before?" Eventually, a gal asked with a mischievious grin, "why are you out and about in your underwear, did you have to make a quick escape?"

If it's droopy, dimpled, veiny or unsightly, cover it up.

Short shorts should be reserved for children.

Avoid this look at all costs:
