Pottery makers in Northern Mexico struggle as tourism plummets .

A short video of potters in Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, looks at a town where making pottery is the local industry and tradition. But it's now in jeopardy because tourist from the USA are afraid to come. These artisans create some of the same designs and figures unearthed in nearby Paquime, an ancient Indian settlement that is now an archaeological site.

The same issues are reported here in Yucatan and also in Chilpansingo, Guerrero. Even the peaceful areas are getting hammered by the US Govt's and US Media's war.

Has anybody found a formula for getting even family members to travel here?

For now, fear seems to rule.

From what we saw on our most recent trip, this is the prevailing situation in cities, towns & villages scattered all throughout Mexico who have been reliant on selling arts, crafts and other location specific products. It was evident in the larger areas such as Tonala and Tlaquepaque, the medium sized cities such as San Miguel de Allende, Patzcuaro and Dolores Hidalgo and the smaller towns like Santa Clara del Cobre or Cuanajo in Michoacan.

It made me sick when I saw evidence of "opportunists" taking advantage of the business downturn by demanding lower pricing of these artists barely making a living.
