Pesos

Upon hearing I will be visiting Mexico next month, a friend brought me a 5000 peso note from el Banco de Mexico that she had saved from a vacation she took years ago. It was minted in Feb. 1987. Could it possibly be worth nearly $500 dollars US? She thinks it is worth about $5.00 US (or mainly only perhaps $.50.) I remember reading about the devaluation of the peso and wondered if this bill is currently worth anything? Can anyone advise me on this?

That $5,000 peso bill is valuable only to a numismatist.

In my opinion the old MX$5000 note picturing the Niños Heroes was one of the most beautiful ever printed. The current line-up leaves a lot to be desired numismatically, especially the $20 and $50 peso "mini-bills".

Thanks, Jennifer and John-
It is a pretty bill. I guess I won't try to spend it.

I think the the new pesos were minted around 93 or 94.At that time I think the exchange rate was about 3000 old pesos to $1 dollar. They basically just removed the last three zeros. So your 5000 peso bill is now worth 5 pesos face value. Since the bill is so old I don't now if the Mexican banks will exchange it. It might be worth more to a collector.

After the revaluation of the currency, there was a cutoff date for exchanging the old bills. It expired long ago.

It seems to me that there was a website that would detail for you what Pesos were still legal tender and which are not. Does anyone remember what that site was?

The most beautiful aspect of any currency is its liquid and instantaneous convertibilty into goods and services. If there is anyone out there who doubts that and is enamored of the artistic qualities of imprinted currency, I have a trunk full of Confederate bills signed by a great great grandfather that I will sell you real cheap. I mean CHEAP!
