PAN candidates beware

Can't Post | Private Reply
Diego Fernandez de Cevallos represented the PAN in an election ultimately won by the PRI candidate Ernesto Zedillo. He has been kidnapped and there were traces of blood located at the scene where he was grabbed from his truck. This is big news. Anyone who reads the papers knows that there is a surge of politicians being captured and killed but this man is the most important thus far. Twitter contains unconfirmed reports both that he has been killed and also that a narcomensaje has been left at the scene threatening the life of President Calderon who is also a member of PAN.

Good. Only until Mexico's problems hit the elite where it hurts will something be done about it.

It might be more complicated that that. Jefe Diego was -- or is -- more tied these days to the Gomez-Mont faction within PAN, which seems to be on the outs with the Calderón faction as well as somewhat notorious (in the English sense of the word) for his activities as a lawyer defending powerful businesses and individuals. And... just to make it more interesting... SDPNoticias is reporting that Manuel Espino (the former PAN president, from the extreme "piety" wing of the party) is the source for stories that Fernández de Cevallos has turned up dead... ON A MILITARY BASE.

I'm sorry that is not even an intelligent remark.

Remember the Martí family, whose adolescent son was kidnapped and killed? Remember the president's top aide, Juan Camilo Mouriño, whose plane crashed under highly suspicious circumstances? These are just a couple of examples of Mexico's problems 'hitting the elite'. Mexico's problems have already hit the elite, with no apparent benefit of "something being done about it".

And "good" is hardly a comment I'd expect from an intelligent, compassionate person after hearing that another--any other--person is in this sort of trouble.

That's true that it is an inappropriate comment. It's just that I love Mexico and it always frustates me that the leaders of the country don't care or do what is needed to make it the great place that it is and could be. There is NO WAY that Mexico and Mexicans should be poor. The blame lies squarely at the feet of their political and economic mismanagement.

Experanza: I've been hearing and reading much the same sort of response throughout Mexico, though less a knee-jerk anti-"elites" reaction as one to Fernández de Cevallos' position within the elites: even among the elites, the feeling seems to be the guy was (or is) scum, but he was their scum.

"Juan Camilo Mouriño, whose plane crashed under highly suspicious circumstances?"

¿Do you have new evidence?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7730673.stm

"Turbulence from a nearby aircraft - not mechanical failure or foul play - is believed to have caused a plane crash in Mexico last week, officials say.

A cockpit recording showed the pilots realised they had hit turbulence just before the ministry Learjet crashed.
The transport minister said it had been flying too close to a large passenger plane ahead of it on the flight path.

Transport and Communications Minister Luis Tellez told a news conference that a preliminary inquiry had found the jet was nearly one nautical mile too close behind a Boeing 767-300.

He said Mexican, US and British experts examining the wreckage found no sign of sabotage and that the flight was normal until just seconds before it plummeted from the sky. "

Arbon, inocente, of course there is 'no new evidence'--at least not published evidence. But goodness, you surely don't believe everything that the government announces...

I would not need to believe what any government politician has to say.

But it would be really perverse* for multinational aeronautical inspectors to ignore the evidence.

perverse-----against self interest.

It's one thing to find evidence and another thing entirely to announce it.

What they announced may have absolutely nothing to do with what they found.

I hate to ask, but are you sure we want to continue this conversation? Seems we're suppose to be seen and not heard when it comes to matters of the Mexican State.

Uh, foreign residents are not supposed to actively participate in, or attempt to influence, Mexican politics. Commenting on the news of the day, and Mexican reaction to that news, is a sign of interest in the country. And, for that matter, several of the commentators here are either Mexican citizens, or foreigners outside the country.

Ok, guess I'm just old fashioned and stuck with living the Golden Rule, I keep my personal feelings regarding Mexican politics to myself news or not. I don't appreciate their interference in my countries politics like a recent inappropriate event when my Congressman was lectured by the President of Mexico on the floor of Congress There's a comment on "news" if you want to call it that, not very pretty is it?

I'm not exactly sure what the 20 May 2010 speech to the United States House of Representatives has to do with sheerther on not one can comment on Jefe Diego, but just for the record, I'm wondering if your House Member was even there. Of the 89 Republican House members only 29 had to good manners to attend the event to which the House had invited Calderón. The rest filled their seats with interns or staffers while pontificating on the "rudeness" of being lectured to.

Besides which, U.S. Ambassadors lecture the Mexican Camera and Senado all the time.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program of carps, complains and crotchets.

Two things, first of all my Rep is not a Republican, so he probably suffered through the session out of PC. However, more important and interesting is that our ambassador actually lectures the Mexican legislative bodies from their own floor? - I'd like to read about that, could you give me some links to when that actually happened, sounds interesting and we should show interest, I must have missed the story.
