Do any of you older members of this web sight know of other good web sights that give fairly up to date news of conditions here in Mexico?

Ana Salazar's Mexico Weekly has just started up but looks to be quite informative, as has been her Mexico Today blog for some time now.

When I first moved here, I was frustrated by the lack of English-language writing on Mexican politics (at least on Mexican politics that didn't obsess over what the U.S. and foreign governments saw as their particular concern... ik.e., not everything revolves around narcos, or migration or — an issue that has receded for now — U.S. access to Mexican energy sources). For a long time, I did quite a bit of that kind of posting on my own site, but with others doing so, I'm less likely to do so... and whether or not I was "good" isn't for me to say.

http://ganchoblog.blogspot.com and http://aguachile.com are the two best at providing information on national political issues and concerns I've found. The first, by Patrick Cocoran, is no longer IN Torreón, but follows the general security/political trends in Mexico rather closely. If nothing else, he keeps up with what the political columnists are saying. Aguachile's author is an academic specializing in studying the PRD, and he focuses perhaps more than I like on that party, but is very, very good.

Lourdes Cardenas, at the El Paso Times writes Mexico In Focus (http://elpasotimes.typepad.com/mexico/) which, naturally, tends to look more at Juarez and northern border issues (i.e. migration, narcotics related violence) than others, but she also follows the Mexican political scene and — with national elections next yet — plans to spend more time on that.

Thanks for posting the link to the gancho blog -- It looks interesting.
There seems to be an error in the other link (aguachile)...

Being a news junkie, I have found that having media sites from all over Mexico in my bookmarks and then using GOOGLE translate gives me a better overall understanding of what is going on. GOOGLE translate isn't 100% in its translation but once one gets used to its common mistakes, you know where to use a little poetic license. A side benefit is that I am starting to grasp more words and phrases in Spanish.

OK -- that link does work! Looks like an excellent site -- I'm an avid follower of Mexican politics, via the local paper, but being able to read a nuanced, informed account in English will be a great addition!

If you are interested in getting the flavour of life in small town Mexico try: www.jaltembajalapeno.com. We don't do national news but focus on our small communities located on Jaltemba Bay in Nayarit. If you are trying to get a sense of what it would be like being an expat living in a very real Mexican community you might find it useful. We cover the parades, local sewer issues, events of all kinds etc.....

Johan....If we all do a little we can do a lot. Visit our little corner of paradise at the Jaltemba Jalapeño.

There seems to be a problem with your site. I was curious to find out about your sewage system. In Catemaco, Veracruz some gringos would stone you for portraying such mundane details.

It may not be popular but it is part of the reality of our dialy lives here. We try to cover the issues.

Can you please email me (jaltembajal@gmail.com) with the problem you encountered or were you just referring to the problem that we report boring stuff. :)

The site won't open. We don't get a 404 or "not found" report, just "waiting for..."

The top link is bad. the lower one works,, but unfortunately, from what I could decipher, yours is just another gung ho Mexico site without sewage problems.

Sorry to disappoint Catemaco. The only mention of sewer issues on the main site is this article: A historic meeting

which I agree doesn't contain a lot of information about sewer problems. The sewer issue has been aired more extensively on the forum which it would not be proper for me to post a link to here. The invitation was not intended to offend but you are definitely correct that it is a gunho site. We are passionate about promoting our little corner of paradise. Come visit us any time.

Re: waiting for response. We are in the process of acquiring a better host that can more quickly and reliably serve up the our content.
