On the road!

My lady and I will be leaving Mazatlan Monday morning for Ajijic for two nights and then on to Patzcuaro for a few days. We'll be staying at Nuevo Posada and Mansion Iturbe. We've read the posts in the archive regarding this great journey, including the resources for some great articles for the house.

What I'm wondering is if there are any events of note occuring we should be aware of. We enjoyed the 15th and 16th here but are curious if there are local happenings of a less dramatic but worthy nature we should be looking for.

Thanks,

Gordon Gilkey

September is big month for Patzcuaro this year, celebrating its 470th anniversary. See my post on the Michoacan forum.

Be sure to wander up the hill to the Museum of Popular Arts and to the ex-Colegio Jesuita. Last week my amblings caught me watching the mojigangas practice there, and it was fascinating to see what was underneath those giant costumes. Part of Patzcuaro's charm is simply those random encounters. It's the kind of place which unveils itself, little by little.

If you're looking for a guided tour, either of Patzcuaro or off into the lake villages, let me recommend Kiko Castilleja, http://www.mexonline.com/erongaricuaro.htm, one of the area's treasures.

At the Mansion Iturbe, try to get one of the renovated rooms in the Plus section. The new bathrooms are truly outstanding.
