I lived in the state of Veracruz from 2009-2010. I quickly discovered that no see ums prefer gringas and that I'm fairly horribly allergic to the little demons. I ended up moving up into the mountains to get away from them. I'm about to move back to Mexico and I'm wondering if the same bug exists on the Pacific ocean side of the country? Gracias amigos!

We were pestered by them in Mazatlan & now the same is true seasonally in Comala, Colima. Good luck!!! We alsow ould like to find such a place but it may be a trade off to living in the tropics.

Well dang! Obviously not what I wanted to hear. I didn't seem to notice them up in the central plateau. Has this been y'alls experience also?

Hello all,

No-seeums (jejunes?) are thick as flies in San Blas, Nayarit when there is no wind. With a small breeze they disappear.But really bothersome.

But at the Aticama beach just a few kilometers South, I (also a gringo) have never been bothered with no-seeums although the mosquitoes can be thick. Same at Los Cocos.

I spent a winter at Melaque near La Manzanilla and Manzanillo and was never bothered with no-seeums either.

I spent two weeks at Cosola Nayarit and never was bothered by no-seeums.

excuse me! i looked "no see ums" up in an entomology text,
cook book, the canadian and the english oxford dictionary and found nothing.
this board won't allow me to use the language i invented, appropriately called pedro speak because some people reading here have english as a second language i was told.yet someone can post about something called "no see ums"?
what exactly is that in proper english or espanol-por favor?
it's not even in yanqui spell check, which most of us language persons know is not correct english either. what to do! what to do!
how will i know if i am allergic to them, if i don't know what they are?

Sigh. In see that no forum is immune from 'those' sorts of folks.

So it appears that these things can be very localized. Hmm, in some of the places that have been mentioned, if I remember correctly, aren't they on the beach? Would the breeze coming off the ocean be keeping them away?

Back in the 70's, I worked for a backpacking company that had the very first "no seeum" proof window mesh. I was working in Colorado where these were unheard of. When I did a sales clinic, I had an empty jar with a lid and explained that this is what we were protecting out customers from.

Yes the breeze keeps them away and when the breeze dies they are right there really hungry!
Funnym Don Pedro , English is my second actually third language and I know what no see ums are, how come you never heard of them?

I have to somewhat disagree with you Willie. Mazatlán, for me is somewhat unique on the west coast, as the jejenes are only bad (and I'm VERY sensitive to them) in certain areas at certain times of year. I've lived in two very different locations in Mazatlán in the years (year 'round) that I have been here and not one single no-see-um bite, not even at my store in the Golden Zone. Yet I know folks that live up the hill (east of my store) and they have a terrible problem with the jejenes.

I love San Blas, Nayarit, but if you're out of the breeze there, they will eat you up at about any time of year.

David, we were only bothered seasonally a few times when living in Mazatlan. Our exterminator did a good job for us for everything else but I guess the geckos took care of most of the nenes/no-see-ums rest of the time.
Anyone want to buy a house in Centro Historico Mazatlan?

We are in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, on the Sea of Cortez. Desert landscape - fantastic sea. We do get winter here - about 10-15 degrees warmer in winter then Phoenix and about the same amount cooler in the summer. About an easy hour's drive to the AZ/Mexico border. At the moment fantastic housing deals due to the real estate down slide in AZ. Do not tend to get a lot of bugs - or no see ums.

Having lived in several other places in this old world I have some knowledge of these critters. Here in the mountain part of Queretaro where we live, I cannot remember having such a problem. I am not going to say exactly where, as they may come to find me! Besides. . . . . . . all you sweet meat gringos for the no see ums, just might want to move here ! (smiling)
