Nextel Cell Phone Service is Coming to México

Can't Post | Private Reply
MEXICO CITY, Oct 2 (Reuters) - México's government has issued a license to Nextel Mexico and partner broadcaster Televisa that will allow them to deploy a wireless phone network in the country, officials said on Saturday.
The issuing of the license caps a series of legal disputes filed by potential competitors and opens the way for more competition in the country's mobile telephone market dominated by billionaire Carlos Slim's America Movil.

Strange article Rolly. Going back to at least August of 2008, one of the companies that we do business with in Santa Clara del Cobre has had all of their upper level employees equipped with NEXTEL. Their business cards all specify NEXTEL contact numbers and I have witnessed them using the "walkie talkie" feature that is somewhat unique to NEXTEL.

Nextel has been in Mexico for years. The article does not make it clear, but my guess is that they just acquired radio frequencies in new market areas, presumably to increase their coverage.

As in the USA, I believe that Nextel Mexico is more focused to the business user, with their walkie-talkie feature, and less focused on individual customers.

Apparently Nextel is partnering with Televisa, the TV company.

For a number of years, Nextel has offered the service Neil mentions--similar to a walkie-talkie. Cellular phone service is different from that.

I have also called them using their cell phone number on these very same phones. Granted that portion of their service could be through a different provider - I have no way of knowing?

The competition for the wireless air licenses has been a big political controversy for at least the last year. Televisa, probably the largest media conglomerate in Mexico, has a huge amount of political influence, and the process under which licenses were issued by COFETEL has been very controversial. The point being that there is much more to this than a triumph against the Telcel monopoly -- not a David and Goliath story, more like Goliath and Goliath, with all the potential Davids being kept out of the contest.

Nextel is a kind of hybrid service, with push-to-talk service like a walkie-talkie, as well as conventional cellular phone service. If you carry a Nextel phone, it will perform both functions. The individual client probably has no use for the walkie-talkie function, but as a phone it works like any other cell phone.
