Hello all, NEW MUSEUM OPENS IN ZACATECAS CITY The Galería Tierra Colorada (Redland Gallery—a doff of the cap to our poet laureate Ramón López Velarde) was opened as a permanent exhibit next to Templo Santo Domingo (The chapel Holy Sunday) in the historic center of Zacatecas on the 2nd of August 2011. It contains twenty sacred works and 400 different forms of traditional fragua (forge -black-smithing) work. The twenty sacred works are of different techniques, such as use of Calcium Hydroxide and natural pigments as well as more traditional oils, inks, etc. The exhibition has the goal of presenting more than 23 years work in the restoration of various chapels and churches here in Zacatecas and Jalisco by the architect Ruben Saucedo. The black-smithing work is a collection of some 400 works by Gustavo Juárez and covers all forms of forging or smithing. It includes torcidos (twisting or turning of iron bars), remachadados (riviteng) uniones caldeados ( union of two pieces of metal through heating to red hot or white hot temperatures and then pounding together on an anvil) and machucados (other types of black-smithing). Since it has been named as a Gallery rather than as a museum, perhaps some of the iron work will be for sale. It was not so specified, although it is planned that the exhibit will remain as a permanent fixture on the Zacatecas scene. Hours are not specified although the normal work day in Zacatecas is 10 to 1-siesta- and two to eight. Museum hours can be different and usually include at least one day of no charge and another day of closure. I have not yet seen the exhibition so cannot yet provide more information. Enjoy, jerezano
