Needing VW automotive answers

Hola,

I have a 1971 VW camper...and its looking all of its 40 years old.
I'm ready to take a road trip again and thought I might drive it down and then get some work done.

First off I'm wondering if I can install an engine and maybe a trans from a newer VW van. I though on my last trip 5/6 years back that I saw vans in mexico with water cooled engines. But do they still run hot? Or by chance, is there a diesel engine for the van? If so, is it water or air cooled?

I know that I can get the body and paint work done there...as in almost anywhere. So the big question is an engine swap out.

There is a club site I found for VW owners...called Vochoweb, but my spanish is not as good for non-translated web pages as it is in person. It did seem that their members were more to the north Gaudalajara and Guanajuato.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Thanks
Seth

I used a late 70s trans in my 71 bus and it worked very well. Much better for the highways, cruise easy at 75 mph. I prefer a type 1 motor from a 74-75 super beatle (better oiling system) built to about 1835cc, any larger will sacrifice reliability. Air cooled, easy to work on. 1/2 the price to rebuild than the later. No computor or fuel injection to deal with. Simple is better , esp in Mexico.
