Muy buenas y felicidades y gracis y....

HiHo from a newbie of the coarsest cut. MC is the needle and life the haystack. Thanks to all who make this what it is.
My "issue": Currently live in SW Florida...soon to live in San Carlos (Sonora)...am a cancer doc (oncologist) who'll be filling both time and coffers doing fairly frequest "locum tenens" (i.e., short assignments of several days to several months in duration) in EU. My sense is that a smarty would fly Hermosillo or Guymas to Phoenix and then onward and outward to whereeversville. This appears to mandate regular use of the infamous America West. Can't justify a repeated drive to AZ for each assignment.
My question: do rational alternatives exist?
(Pushing my luck) My Second - and totally unrelated-question: I have emailed el gobernador del estado Sonora to inquire if he (or any interested biz folks) would consider joint venturing to devlop a radiation oncology facility in Hermosillo (to serve all of Sonora) as I suspect (in abject but total ignorance) that Sonoran folks with malignant disease likely have to seek quality care elsewhere and at a significant distance. No reply from him to date. Ergo the question: Can anyone suggest a rational and efficient manner by which I can determine if such a concept would benefit the people of Sonora and, if so, how to go about finding the correct decision makers...
Muchisimas gracias. Mi nombre es Craig.

Radiation Oncology in Sonora

Can't Post |
Why don't you contact some of the oncologists who practice in Sonora? http://www.portal-hermosillo.com/...dicos/oncologos.html lists a few, but surely that is not an all-inclusive list. Have you made an assessment of the level and quality of care available in Hermosillo, or are you simply speculating?

Secondly, you have the matter of obtaining your cedula in Mexico and a work permit.

Thanks for your replies:
Jennifer Rose - It's pure unadulterated speculation. Will communicate with the listed Sonora oncologists (appreciate your sourcing).
Bubba- I suspect your kind words are possibly spot on and insightful...life for me, however, is valueless without challenge.
Any thoughts on locum tenens logistics from San Carlos?
Thanks in advance.
Craig

I suggest you post your question on the Viva San Carlos bulletin board here:

http://vivasancarlos.com/bulletin/index.html

There's limited seasonal international service from the airport in nearby Guaymas. More flights available from Hermosillo, about two hours by car from San Carlos, including direct flights to Phoenix and Mexico City where you can make connections to Europe.

Bubba- Thanks...I knew you were.
KH- The SC board is a hoot! Not too many posts and the majority have to do with internecine voting on the propriety of "advertising" by a local restaurant...I'm more certain than ever that SC is my kind of town. It seems the cleverness award-winning resolution is, ironically, to fly to AZ, rent a car there and drive to SC. America West doesn't appear to have many cheerleaders among the cognoscenti...
You've all been helpful - thanks.

You might look into first class bus service. I doubt that you would be able to cross the border with a rental car.

U J - Armed with suggestions elsewhere on MC, I was just advised by Dollar (nationwide) that, indeed, appropriately clad (license and credit card) folks can rent their cars in (e.g.) Phoenix and drive them (unlimited time and distance into the country) into Mexico. Same cars and daily rates as applicable in Phoenex. Additional cost is mandatory $25 daily "mexican insurance" fee (which must be purchased through Dollar). For me personally, it's ideal, as it circumvents need to patronize America West, allows scenery gawking on Phoenix-San Carlos leg and obviates need to rent a car in Mexico (which, I glean, is likely to be more expensive than a Phoenix rental...supply/demand being what it likely is). Others have suggested that Hertz-and possibly other vendors- have similar programs.
Life just got a tad "easier".

That's good to know. I had heard that rental cars were allowed in Baja California, but had always been told that they were verboten in mainland Mexico.

(unlimited time and distance into the country) Now that is a revelation!

I have rented a car in Phoenix and taken it to San Carlos.

Try Saban's Phoenix Rent a car. 3625 W Indian School Rd. or 2934 E. McDowell. 602-269-9310.

They still advertise in the Phoenix phone book that they rent cars for Mexico. They rent anything from compacts up to 15 passenger vans.

Our experience was very good with them. The rates weren't that much different than local car rentals from the big name agencies. You buy the Mexico insurance from Them.

Anyone thinking of living in San Carlos year round should visit there in the summer. It's 10 degress to 15 degrees F hotter than Phoenix and more humid.

San Carlos is absolutely wonderful in Winter and spring. Great fishing, beautiful coastline.

Patricio- It's the magnet that draws me to SC (the summer heat, fishing, desert and pleasantness during FallWinter). My history is 15 years of twice-annual fishing trips to Cabo...the topography (and Ed Giddings architecture) arrested me originally. Then Cabo imperceptibly morphed into Cancun-minor and lost its attraction for me. SC (from the distance) is reminiscent of the early Cabo both topographically and by size/non-pretentiousness. I'll be spending a few weeks there next month (to try it on for size and to let it kick my tires as well)...all evidence to date suggests a nirvana of sorts. We'll see.
