Move to Mexico & Purchase of Washing Machine in USA or Mex

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am trying to decide if I should purchase a new washing machine in the US prior to my move to Mexico or to wait and buy it in Mexico. I will be using my own cargo van for the move so my main concerns are cost and the Mexican Customs. Any suggestions on this ?

If you are using a menaje de casa, the items must be at least 6 months old. The custom guys can determine its date of manufacture by the serial number, so you'll probably get caught with a new one. If you are not using a menaje, you'll have to pay an import duty.

You'll find good washing machines in Mexico that cost a bit more than in the USA, but maybe not that much more when the duty is tacked on. If you buy in Mexico you'll have a warrantee that you can get service on whereas your USA purchase may not be covered here.

Buy a new washer up north and paying duty on its importation strikes me as a less-than-wise move.

Under the circumstances you've described, my advice is to buy the washer here. Use the space and money you would've spent on duty to bring down something less available here.

Thanks for your reply. I will be waiting until I get there to purchase the wasting machine. I am curious however about a part of your answer pertaining to using the space to bring things that are not plentiful in Mexico. What items are particuluarly in short supply in Mexico? In other words, what should I be thinking about buying in the USA before going down to the land South of the Border ? Will be traveling on an FM-3.

That's sort of like asking me what things are important to you. If I were moving again with a menaje de casa, I'd buy a new computer 6 months before departure. While computer prices in Mexico have come down, those Dell deals that are going on in the US can't be beat. I'd pick up computer peripherals like a new router. (I paid $60 for a wireless one in Atlanta last month which would've cost double that here.) I'd hit a white sale and pick up new towels and sheets, because at least good quality ones, if available, cost about double here. Small kitchen appliances like a George Foreman grill, a Cuisinart, an expresso machine, the rice steamer, a waffle iron, a couple of English-language keyboards, and nice pots and pans. That old HP LaserJetIII printer. Natural-fiber clothing and lots of shoes. A Dremel MotoTool and a cordless drill. A manual typewriter.

But those are some of things which are important to me. Your mileage may vary.

Today, more than ever, hard goods are available in Mexico. But the selection is limited and the price dear.

Someone recommended having the garage sale of a lifetime before moving here. That's not my advice. Bring all that you can, because going out and replacing those odds and ends isn't easy.

I find getting your clothes and linens washed is so easy that I would consider other things more important. Mexicans have been washing clothes forever. They come out of paper houses washed and starched and shining. Sweeping and washing are easy to come by. The washaterias in SMA pick up, wash and fold, and deliver. My poly cotton sheets feel like silk. Comfortable, soft upholstered furniture, good pots and pans, good sheets and large bath towels, corn meal and extra rear view mirrors and car radio antennae. If you do bring a dryer be sure it is gas because electricity can be expensive.

I recall another forum that discussed how made in Mx appliances are more suitable as they are designed to handle the inconsistant power supply. True? Or have I been into Bubba's fantasy-tonic supply again?

Things to bring down:

Boiled green peanuts
East Carolina BBQ Sauce
Duke's Mayonnaise
A case of Belgian beer at 13% alcohol that walks on anything available here
Those French chocolates with the various liquors inside
A Weber smoker
Four liters of the finest single malt scotch
A sack of rutabagas, yellow onions and heirloom tomatoes (do not declare these)
New Orleans pralines (something simiilar to this is available in Tapalpa)
Extra shoes to fit Gringos
Fat boy stuff for some of us
Canned foie gras and cornichons

I think I'm beginning to detect the reasons for my weight problem.

Quite a list of food items. I see that about 50% are alcoholic beverages and the other 50% are good for adding to the waistline. Now I can understand some of those replies from Bubba on the Forum. Looks like if you are not already living the life you are in rapid pursuit of it. Good luck with your waist line. But I shouldn't talk when it comes to waist lines either Bubba. Thanks for your kind suggestions however.
