Money Xfers To/From USA

Can't Post | Private Reply
A friend who lives half time each in USA and Mex, as do I, asked about using SafeSend to transfer money from USA to Mexico.

Does anyone have any experience or comment on that (SafeSend) ?

That also begs the question of transferring money to/from/between USA and Mex. We both, friend and I, already use and know about ATMs, PayPal, WesternUnion, etc.

However, there are oher methods (e.g. Lloyds, at least in San Miguel de Allende, was popular - but is scarce in many parts of Mex). SO, other than those mentioned, which other methods are convenient for those only have tourist visas here in Mex ?

I've been told that Bank of America in USA has a safe/cheap xfer method to a Mex bank (? would that require having a bank acct. at either or both institutions?).

What methods other than ATM, WesternUnion, bank xfer, or PayPal are cheap, fast, easy and safe ?

That would be Safesend and the other bank would be Santander. This was an account to account transfer. There were other options to pick up the funds, but I don't remember the sites BofA used. I haven't heard much of this service since BofA sold their share in Santander. Even then, BofA managers knew little about this service. I believe that the first transfer had to initiated at a BofA building in the US. After that, by telephone. Of all the people that I knew that had BofA account, none used the service.

With at least 80 offices throughout México, I can unreservedly recommend Intercam Casas de Cambio. They specialize in moving money from the U.S. and Canada (but particularly the U.S.) to México and give excellent exchange rate (often better than the banks here). I have used them exclusively for a number of years and never had any problem whatsoever regardless of the amount I wanted to move. Quite small to very, very large.

Now that link cracks me up! You have to enter the State and so I naturally entered NM. It automatically assumes that you are Mexican and everything is in Spanish. After all, why would a Gringo want to send money to Mexico?

I don't have to enter a state to look at it, and it is in English for me. Hmmm.
Go to the Bank of American main website, search for Safe Send, all the info is there in English. Plenty of English speaking people use this service.
It is not a bank to bank transfer. You do have to have a B o A account to send money, but anyone can receive it. There are a couple banks money can be picked up at in Mexico.

Obviously the site is reading my ISP and making assumptions. Since I currently don't have a need or use for this service, it hardly makes a difference but I was curious from an educational standpoint.

I think perhaps because I am a Bank of America customer, it "knows" what state my banking is in, even though I also have a Mexican IP address.

Getting back to the original post. For the last several months we have been using XOOM to transfer money from our USA bank account to my wife's account at HSBC Mexico. It is about the quickest and least expensive way we have found to transfer money. The initial limit is usually $3000 per month which they raise to $6000 after 2-3 months. The fee for the transfer is only $4.99 if you transfer directly from your bank account in the USA. The transfer is accomplished in about 4 hours or less to our HSBC account. If you transfer to BBVA Bancomer the transfer is done in about 15-20 minutes. The rate we receive is usually about 10 centavos better than the conversion rate we receive at HSBC. There is no charge at the HSBC receiving end of the transfer.

We also use wire transfers if we need to move larger amounts as when we purchased our home. The fee charged by our bank was $22.50 with HSBC charging about $25 on the receiving end.

Xoom transfers are completed on your computer over the Internet. You are able to track the progress of the transfer. Overall, we have found Xoom to be more convenient, less expensive and more reliable than Western Union, ATM withdrawals in Mexico from our USA bank and normal bank wire transfers.

Google Xoom Money transfer for more info.

Wells Fargo has the Express Send service. You have to set it up in person at your branch. You can then do an online transfer of money to a bank account or you can transfer money just to a bank and then pick up the money in person. The fee is $3.50.

Visit a Bank of America banking center, open a personal checking account and sign up for SafeSend

This is from the first link. First, I have to open a personal checking account. Wait, I have a personal checking account, but there is no link for those who already have an account. How do I sign up for Safesend while living in Mexico? After several calls to BofA, I finally got transferred to an extension that never answered. There must be someone registered on this forum that uses Safesend!

Last time I was in Texas, I was told at the BoA branch that I had to sign up in person for the service. I honestly can't remember whether or not I signed up because I haven't needed to use it.

Good Morning fordmexico,

I think my Inter National Bank in Texas offers a better deal, is just as fast (all such transactions go through a "third party" bank such as Chase or whatever) and it is the sending and receiving banks option to levy charges.

Inter National Bank in Texas is owned by Banorte in Mexico. There is NO CHARGE for any wire transactions and the exchange rates are par with XE currency conversion rates.

My Banorte or Inter National Bank debit cards can be used at either bank here in Mexico, or in the USA, to draw from my account in either direction.

In Mexico a maximum of $6500 MX pesos per day, for as many days as you have the $$$$ in either bank from my Banorte ATM, unlimited $$$$ draw from Banorte account per day, as long as I actually go into my Banorte in person to make such a larger withdrawal, I have transferred very large amounts for buying land plus another lot and a house.

There are also a lot of other fees that banks have today, that you might not notice. For example I used to have a bank that when I called to find out my balance or if any of my pensions, social security, etc., had arrived. I used to be charged $3.00 USD for each account check up fee.

Since I am a senior and I have my pensions directly wired to the bank from the government, I never have to now pay such fees. If I overdraft my account, I do pay a fee of $32.00 like most banks have and that is OK, for me, it makes me be a little more astute at keeping track of my account. I also have a overdraft allowance that if I use that, it will also cost me another $32.00 USD. Once again, for me that is good to know, in case I should have some kind of emergency.

You have said:. . . . . . . . "For the last several months we have been using XOOM to transfer money from our USA bank account to my wife's account at HSBC Mexico. It is about the quickest and least expensive way we have found to transfer money. The initial limit is usually $3000 per month which they raise to $6000 after 2-3 months. The fee charged by our bank was $22.50 with HSBC charging about $25 on the receiving end."
. . . . . . that to me totals about $47.50 USD and I pay nothing for such large money transfers. I pay no fees whatsoever, for even smaller wire transfers. . . . . . . . . . Only thing is that I cannot receive USD and must only receive Mex Pesos in Banorte . . . . . . . . just saying.

Regards,

robt65

Could you elaborate more on this option? Me and my partner are thinking about buying a home in Puerto Vallarta. Since he's Mexican, we will most likely buy it under his name - to avoid fideicomiso. I will probably have to somehow transfer $35,000 DLLS from my american HSBC account to him in PV. I am trying to figure out how to do this...

Friends: there is WAAAY too much info and detail in some of these posts re money. This one gives bank names, location, and a notable amount of money - not to mention info available on profiles.

I managed a computer function at a USA National Lab, and can tell you that there is no such thing as a totally secure computer/Internet connection, and banks are some of the worst in terms of security. The better hackers are better than most government and corporate computer folks.

It would be wise for all to limit info on any and all posts and communications on the Internet. That said, I would not lose any sleep over the above post, but I WOULD change my Internet security habits.

Viktor, it´s very easy to transfer money by wire transfer.

Just get your partner to ask his branch for the latest wire transfer for that branch, including, sometimes the actual street address for the branch (you may not even need that). Then you just go into your branch in the US and transfer the money. (We have done it many times, not just to our own account, but to lawyers, contractors, etc, from our account in Canada).

I guess I just don't understand why one needs to transfer money when you can just withdraw it from an ATM.

When you need 200,000 peso to buy a car or 1,000,000+ to buy a house. Can't think of anything else.

Well, that would be a problem, all right. We've never needed that much at one time. When we have needed a large amount for a surgery, to buy kitchen cabinets, etc. we have had to withdraw the limit (from an ATM) several days in a row. BTW, if anyone hasn't tried that yet, it's best to notify your bank and advise them you'll be doing that so they don't think the activity is illicit and put a hold on it. 'Sorry to barge in here with an unworkable suggestion. Best wishes and Merry Christmas!

Well, I can think of MANY situations that are well beyond ATM cash withdrawals.

One is payments directly to/from individuals and businesses in USA; another is cash needs well in excess of ATM limits (even successive withdrawals over days); another is loss of ATM/credit/debit card (that has happened to me twice and three separate card replacements never arrived to me in Mex via FedEx and UPS).

We all use ATMs here in Mex, and that is a very convenient method. But also beware of excessive charges at both banks involved and sometimes horrible curreny conversion rates by both banks - that can be a substantial added fee.

Also be aware that ATM scams and electronic/camera thefts are increasing a lot in Mex, and ATMs are becoming gradually less secure. (Yeah, yeah, I know, we've all been using ATMs for years in Mex and haven't lost a cent - yet). The hackers and thieves are getting better and better at their thefts, even ATMs at Pemex stations and Mex banks have gotten hit more and more often.

We'll I gotta go now, need to go to my ATM here in Chiapas to get cash. Over and out.

Even if you do make multiple withdrawals to pay some very large bill, paying in cash can put the receiver in a wicked box, since the Mexican banking laws only allow $15,000 of cash deposits per month into bank accounts - without triggering the 2% tax on large cash deposits.

I had to buy a new to me used car Earlier this year after my wife died. I bought it through a nephew in Mexico City. He has a very high paying job as an engineer with Pemex, the national petroleum company. He also runs a business on the side, buying and selling late model used cars.

The car I approved for him to buy for me, had an asking price of $60,000 Pesos. He bought it for me for $50,000 Pesos. It had reasonably low kilometreje on it. When it came time to pay for it, he had me make deposits in to 3 different banks. The accounts were all under the same name. Probably to avoid the tax on large deposits. (There is more than one way to skin a cat.)

I do need to pay a 1% conversion fee to convert my US Dollars into Mexican pesos, plus about a $30 Peso ATM fee. Visa charges my non-profit credit union a 1% conversion fee, which they pass on to me, many commercial banks mark that up to 3%. The conversion and ATM fees are listed on my statements, but they do not reduce my daily withdrawal limit.

It is Mexican plated, it is my third Mexican plated car. if a person is going to live here it is cheaper to have a Mexican plated car, insurance wise, and every other way. That is how it has worked out for me, anyway. No hungry cops ever stop me just for having American license plates. I get an honest measure when I buy gas, and good service in auto shops.

Maybe I have just been lucky, but I never want the hassles and expense of importing another American car, 2 of them was enough for me.
