There are Mexican Rangers? Are you referring to something like the Texas Rangers?

Hello,

Yes we have Mexican rangers. They are a part of or an adjunct of the Mexican army. I can't think of their name right now as I haven't discussed them or met any of them for quite some time. Perhaps the name will come to me or I can find out the name of the corps when I get back to Jerez (I'm now on vacation).

We have a small body of them in Jerez, Zacatecas. They have been there for the past twenty years and God only knows how long before. I used to know personally the Coronel in that group, back in my cantina hopping days.

In past years that's what they called Semanart and Profepa inspectors but they're simply called inspectors now.

Hello colibri1:

OK. A Mexican friend from Jerez has told me that he and his friends called those rangers "Rurales". He didn't know the official government name for the group.

He explained that the Rurales were more or less like the National Guard in the United States. Here in Jerez, they operated in the County but not in the City, although they were quartered here in the city. As for hierarchy he didn't know whether they were subject to State control or to Federal control.

From what he described of their functions they acted somewhat like our County Sherif's act in the US.

For some reason those bodies of Rurales have faded from the picture of recent times. Whether they were disbanded and absorbed by other bodies he and his friends didn't know, nor do I, but I personally have not seen or heard of them for almost 15 or so years.

Following is from a Google search I just made for Rurales+Mexico

Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruralesfor an article dated Dec 2008 which talks about the Rurales and how they were being phased out in in the 1990s. Since I came here to Mexico in 1989, I got to meet some of them. Uniforms of the officers were not blue as I remember but Grey according to the article.

Thanks Jerezano,
Seems like some of them don't want to go away...I know of at least 3 men here in Puerto Penasco that claim to be "Mexican Rangers" and lawfully carry pistols. One wants to be careful when asking questions. I guess I'll just be satisfied with this for now. I'll let you know if I find anything else on this subject. It may be awhile.
