Hello colibri1: OK. A Mexican friend from Jerez has told me that he and his friends called those rangers "Rurales". He didn't know the official government name for the group. He explained that the Rurales were more or less like the National Guard in the United States. Here in Jerez, they operated in the County but not in the City, although they were quartered here in the city. As for hierarchy he didn't know whether they were subject to State control or to Federal control. From what he described of their functions they acted somewhat like our County Sherif's act in the US. For some reason those bodies of Rurales have faded from the picture of recent times. Whether they were disbanded and absorbed by other bodies he and his friends didn't know, nor do I, but I personally have not seen or heard of them for almost 15 or so years. Following is from a Google search I just made for Rurales+Mexico Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruralesfor an article dated Dec 2008 which talks about the Rurales and how they were being phased out in in the 1990s. Since I came here to Mexico in 1989, I got to meet some of them. Uniforms of the officers were not blue as I remember but Grey according to the article. jerezano
