There has been a good bit of chafing around these parts lately, what with all of our personalities bumping up against one another and contradictory ideas about what these boards are for being batted about. It seems like this has happened before, in the not-too-far-distant past (hence the Pedro's hockey puck references, etc). We all lived through it then, and we'll all live through it now. We're just like any neighborhood: some of us are friends (either in the face-to-face world or in the cyber world), some of us cringe when we see so-and-so come through the cyber door, some of us are curmudgeonly and others of us are pollyannas. Some of us like to comadrear for hours over the back fence; others just want to get the skinny about our questions and get out of Dodge. When we ask and answer one another's questions, we're also letting one another see a piece of ourselves that goes beyond the factual (or sometimes not-so-factual) information we're giving out. It's like walking around with our psychological underwear hanging out. My take on all this is sort of like what I was taught in primary school: my freedom extends as far as the end of my arm, but my freedom ends if my hand hits your nose. There's been some nose-hitting on these boards lately, and that needs to stop. The rest~the questions, the answers, the back and forth of conversation~that's the good stuff. What we need to remember is what we share, rather than what drives us apart. These boards, once we've signed up and paid up, are our avenue that join us in sharing information about our mutual love: the Republic of México in all its wonders and delights, its travails and sorrows. Smile at your neighbor and let's get on with the business of discovery. There's a lot to learn about México, and about one another. http://www.mexicocooks.typepad.com
