Menaje

Can't Post | Private Reply
Another question on my move to MX and I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions:

I have my FM3. I am stuffing 3 suitcases with stuff I must have while on my one-year exploratory trip like clothing, meds, business items, laptop peripherals and the like. They'll come on the plane with me. I know I have to pay for the extra suitcase. My journet starts in Ajijac.

I am packing about 10 small cartons with the rest of the stuff I care about and leaving them with my son in the USA.
  1. Is it true that I must get the menaje in the USA? Can't I get it in MX and send it back to my son?
  2. Is it true that I must ship the cartons within a certain time period?
  3. But without a permanent address (I intend to rent at various locations for a while) where do I ship my stuff to?
  4. Or, can I ship it later, maybe in 9 months or a year when I figure out where I'm going to live?

Thanks again for all your help!

In 9 months your ability to take advantage of the manaje will have expired. How about just flying back to see your son and taking the things back with you on the plane? You could probably do 9 boxes in two trips.

Even if you ended up paying a little duty, the cost should be less than the manaje process.

You have 6 months from the date of your FM3 to get your menaje approved at the Mexican consuate serving your home area in the USA. Then you have 90 days to complete your move.

Abq is probably right that you might as well skip the menaje and just pay the small duty.

Can anyone point me to a flow chart regarding the FM-3 and menaje/non menaje process? My head is confused!
Our household goods, which we will bring in in our vehicle, are fairly limited in quantity and luxury level. So, which is the best course?

Hi Mike,

If you are bringing only a car load of things, you may be better off paying the import duty rather than getting a menaje and a customs broker to deal with the customs people at the border.

I you decide to skip the menaje, it would make things go faster at the border if you have a list of the non-personal items along with your estimated values. If your valuations are reasonable, the agent may use your numbers rather than taking the time to do his own. The values are not the original costs or even the replacement costs, but rather what you could reasonably expect to sell the items for.

This is how I'm looking at it. A fair amount of the stuff I'm bring has no duty. The rest couldn't be worth more than $1,000 used (what you could get if you have a garage sale today) The duty on $1,000 is $170. I compared that to the application cost for the manaje, plus the customs broker and decided to hope for the green light and bring pesos as insurance.

BTW I know you're thinking about bring in a truck. I suggest a van or a pickup with topper if you decide to forgo the manaje. A large vehicle might attract too much attention.

Len, check with the airline about that third suitcase.

A friend was just refused the 3rd case, she had to rush out of the terminal and have it shipped to MX ($200), missed the flight.....etc.

About a year ago, we packed up everything in Oregon and used a reputable US moving company (a francisee of United) and moved it all to Mazatlan. We were all worked up about the menage de casa and trying to get things translated, etc. Our agent told us to relax and that they'd just use their inventory at the customs entry south of Nogales.

Well, it worked just fine and our 32' container arrived here with seals intact. It cost $16,500 incl. $2500 for $100,000 insurance (overkill) and there were no hassles whatsoever. We never did get a menage de casa.
