Mail to the U.S.

Jennifer,

I know from your posts that you swear by the Mexican postal service as far as delivery to your place goes. I assume you also use Correos to send stuff back north, although I couldn't find a post with you specifically saying so. We have a need to send a couple of checks to the U.S. What has been your experience regarding rough timing for delivery for letter size articles. More importantly, do you have a recommendation for a particular class of service for sending stuff north, is there any other choice than normal first class or airmail, like the Express Mail option available from the USPS?

Thanks

Ed & Fran

I can't remember what they call it at the post office but I use "return receipt request" and it always gets through. It is delivered in less than two weeks. You fill out a form and when the folks on the other end sign the form, a piece of it is sent back to Mexico that tells you it was delivered. You keep a receipt for tracking in case the return part doesn't come back. Never had a problem that way.

Mexpost is the Mexican Postal Service's version of express mail. It's not available in rural areas and very, very small towns, IIRC. It's also the vehicle of delivery of USPS Express mail to Mexican addresses.

"Return receipt requested" and a certificate of mailing are both available at the Mexican post office.

I've sent checks to the US through ordinary Mexican mail, and they've arrived in about a week. Outgoing mail seems to be faster than incoming mail.

If we have to mail something fast to the U.S., we use Mexico Express Mail. They deliver to anywhere in the U.S. in about 7 days or less. This service is available all over Jalisco state and possibly the whole country. We mailed something to Mexico City and it arrived in 2 days. You will usually find this sevice available in a pharmacy and they always have a sign outside. People in the U.S. can also use the service to mail back to Mexico. It is not cheap, costs us usually 46 pesos for letters to the U.S. and the one time we sent to Mexico City. They don't accept packages, only letters. Their website is http://www.mexicoexpress.com.mx

Ask for an "acuse de recibo"(return receipt) which is the best or "correo certificado" which is certified mail.

If I cannot find a friend heading north, I use Mail Boxes etc. here in the greater Ajijic-Chapala area.

I pay $2.00 per envelope. Once MBE has about 20 envelopes, they send them up in one UPS envelope up to the states where our envelopes have first class stamps placed thereon and mailed.

I don't know whether the above service is only offered lakeside or all over Mexico.

Mailboxes, Etc. has franchises in some, but not all, parts of Mexico. To identify the cities in which MBE operates in Mexico, see http://go.vicinity.com/mbe/prxStart.dsp.

MBE isn't the only show in town when it comes to remailing and forwarding services. It has its competitors.

Another vote for México Express, which friends and business contacts in Mexico have used to send papers which weren't important enough to pay for FedEx, but which they didn't want to entrust to the Mexican postal service. Envelopes are apparently express-shipped in bulk to the US; once they cross the border they're placed into US mail, with mailing occurring according to my postmarks in Los Angeles and Salinas CA. Transit time is on the order of 3-5 days.

I've also used them to send papers to Mexico; their storefront dealer setup has helped me discover a pretty good Mexican grocery store and a discoteca where I can stock up on Norteño music.
