If, for what ever reason, you fail to turn in the permit when you exit the country, there is a procedure for clearing the record. You will need to prepare a sworn affidavit stating that the car is presently in the USA (or your country). Take this affidavit and the permit paper to your area Mexican Consulate. The Consulate, for a fee, will prepare the necessary paperwork for you to take with you to México to clear the records and remove the reference to the old permit. This is the only way you will be allowed to bring another car into México.

Why not? That's how we learn something new. If you know other ways of dealing with the problem, please share.

My post came from information provided by the Mexican consulate in San Antonio. Some months ago a gentleman made a post here telling how he got that instruction from his consulate. He followed it, got the letter from the consulate, went to Mexico and had no problem getting the record cleaned.

We just went through this because, upon return from Mexico, the car was cleared by the person at the vehicle check point at Juarez but he didn't clear the vehicle in the computer. We also failed (our error) to get a receipt from him.
When we tried later to return with another vehicle the computer still showed the first vehicle was still in Mexico and we could not bring in another until it was cleared. We had to take the first car back to the border, go to the vehicle importation office south of Juarez, get paperwork from them then take the car back into the State police office in downtown Juarez, have it inspected, get paperwork completed by them and then take it back to the vehicle importation office and get it cleared from the computer. We can now take another car into Mexico without problem. The total cost? Nothing other than about 30 cents for photocopies. We were told there was NEVER a charge for this procedure and if asked for payment to refuse.
The whole thing was cordially handled but with typical bureaucracy. If you are returning to Mexico with the same vehicle you should have no problem whatsoever, other than a little time and inconvenience. Our experience was made much easier by us being accompanied by our daughter who speaks excellent Spanish from living in Puebla for seven years but should be little problem even without that.

Hi Rolly

We were told by the vehicle control people in Laredo and Juarez as well as the Consul in our home town that the Consulate could not do this and that the inspection could only be completed by the State Police. I tried to utilize the local Consulate and was told we would have to follow the procedure outlined above.

Possibly some other Consulate can take care of the problem but were were told otherwise. BTW, The Chihuahua State Police officer we spoke to said they did, on average, about fifteen of these a day.

Mepsi, thanks for the update. Some how it doesn't surprise me that things are not the same everywhere or that procedures change. It is good to have current live-from-the-scene updates.
