It's the latest move by the cartel in Mexico's escalating drug war, and one that she says she has no way to fight. She said the gang has established its own public relations arm that issues stories the local papers are under orders to run, or else journalists will get hurt."

I wonder if they pay the full advertising rate? It wasn't so long ago that newspapers here published party propaganda in the news columns (at least one U.S. news network seems to be nothing but). Alarming? Of course... but then most small town papers DON'T rock the boat when it comes to the local major financial interest.

The balacera of 7/16 which left at least 12 dead including 3 innocent civilians got zero coverage in the local Nuevo Laredo papers. Same with the shootout and street blockades that paralyzed the city for over 6 hours two weeks ago. . However the message killing of the Gulf cartel grenade thrower and his family who were dumped in front of the bull ring in July and the young woman whose decapitated corpse was displayed in front of her house as a warning to potential informers two weeks ago got front page coverage. Old fashioned fear for personal safety is what accounts for the lack of coverage on the Zetas in NL, not concern over losing advertising revenue. The Zetas in NL actually dictate to the local papers what they want them to print.
