Is it legal to mail Tequila to the USA?

Can't Post | Private Reply
My sister in Texas wants me to send her some special flavored Tequila.
What she wants cost US$49 in Texas. She is sure I can find it México for less.
I realize it's stupid, but is it legal?

I think your sisters best bet is to go and visit you and pick some up or send it with some one going to see her.

I do not think you will be able to find a commercial shipper that will transport it

you can see what CBP says here

The USPS (US Postal Service) does not accept shipments of alcoholic beverages

Other items, such as alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, liquor), are not considered hazardous but are prohibited and boxes displaying such markings are also prohibited.

FedEx only accepts shipments from registered wholesalers

  1. Alcoholic Beverages
Only licensed entities may ship alcohol of any type with FedEx. For more information, go to fedex.com/us/wine. Consumers may not ship alcohol.
    1. Licensee to Licensee. FedEx will accept alcohol shipments (beer, wine and spirits) when both the shipper and recipient are either licensed wholesalers, licensed dealers, licensed distributors, licensed manufacturers or licensed importers, subject to additional requirements and all applicable laws and regulations. Contact your FedEx account executive for complete details.
    2. Licensee to Consumer. FedEx will accept wine shipments from licensed entities directly to consumers, subject to additional requirements and all applicable laws and regulations. Contact your FedEx account executive for complete details. Shipments of beer or spirits to consumers are prohibited.
    3. Alcoholic Beverages will not be accepted for shipment to Canadafrom the U.S.
    4. Alcoholic Beverages will not be accepted for shipment or delivery by FedEx National LTL in the states of New Jerseyand New Hampshire.

It is not legal to mail any alcohol , especially distilled sprits but same for wine and beer to the States, double illegal to Texas. It will be confiscated if discovered.
A few years ago my family mailed some tiny chocolate bottles containing spirits and I received a letter from customs telling me they had been confiscated because they contained alcohol.

I'm really glad to hear it isn't possible because I didn't want to fool with it anyway.

Besides, depending on where she is in TX it can't be that big of a deal to drive to MX and pick it up herself. From from what TX residents have previously written on forums, you can pretty much bring back any amount as long as you are willing to pay the over limit charge. Someone reported that TX charges either $1 or $1.50 per excess liter. Seemed low to me but NM charges $4.00 per liter, so that figure may be correct?
