Introduction

Greetings,

Just a quick note of introduction and a test of my ability to post. My name is Marion and I am 58 years old. Originally from Louisiana, I now live in Kansas. My wife and I have been happily married for 36 years now. My primary interests lie in learning and practicing Latin American Spanish. I am also love the kitchen area of the forum. The people of Latin America, especially the Mexican people and it's culture draw me. In many ways it is similar to the Cajun culture I grew up in and is largely disappearing.
I work in a jail that houses ICE prisoners (please no flaming). I for the most part love and sympathize with their plight. Some, mostly those coming out of prison, bring a bad rap to those struggling to provide for their families here and back in Mexico. I lived for a time near El Paso, Tx and so have a fair grasp of border culture. As for my Spanish language skills I would classify them as very minimum. So, if you can, I welcome your suggestions and criticisms. I look forward to our meeting here on MexConnect.

P.S. I did not want to cross post so I thought this would be the best forum to introduce myself. Also I am very much interested in all aspects of the culture and country. Not just the language.

In my fully unbiased opinion you have come to the right place!

Welcome to the Mexconnect community. And don't worry about whether you placed your post in the "correct" area. This intro is both welcome and well placed. I know that you will find the Learning Spanish and Kitchen forums of particular value as they are both so informative and supportive.

Enjoy! and don't forget to explore the rest of the site's rich resources as well.

Thanks to David McL and Bajagringo for your warm welcome. I have been lurking on this forum for awhile and have enjoyed it very much. When I was younger and through high school my family use to go to Mexico for vacation. Mostly border areas and the beaches south of Matamoras. It was different than it seems to be now although I admit it has been several years since I've been there. I enjoyed the article on Six degrees of Seperation about the actress DelRio and her connection with the Cajun culture. I grew up near St Martinville and have visited "Evangiline" many times. If you ever get there be sure to visit the new museum devoted to the history of the Acadiens.
My work with immigrants both professionally and at Church, is rewarding as well as conflicting. My heart goes out to many of these and some are among my closest friends. As a country we need to find a more equitable way to deal with our immigration problems. I come from a culture that experienced many of the same problems. For example it was illegal to speak cajun French on the scool grounds. Being raised for the most part by my grandparents who only spoke french, I had to deal with language issues in school. Now after being cajun became cool they are trying to revive the language which I am afraid will be a major struggle. Sorry for the long post. Thanks again for the welcome.

I am not a Cajun, but I was born and raised in New Orleans and went to graduate school in Lafayette. Welcome to Mexconnect!

I have lived full time in Mexico for almost 11 years now and still love it. Sounds like your background would make you a perfect candidate for eventual retirement SoB. My adult children are all married to Mexicans but live just across the river in Texas. They and their families, including numerous in-laws, are very active in Christian outreach on both sides of the border.

We look forward to reading more of your posts and answering any questions we can.

Thanks Carron. It is good to hear from someone with similar interests and background. I was raised just outside Opelousas. Joined the marine Corps right out of high school and made the South East Asia circuit, finally landing back in Okinawa. Having seen a large part of the world, I feel a kinship with others no matter their country of origen. Most people are just trying to get by and have the same dreams and hopes for their children that we do. I look foward to meeting lots of you here on MexConnect and learning lots.
