Insurance for Mexican Plated 2007 Xterra

Can't Post | Private Reply
One time a long time ago, someone on this forum when discussing something about buying Mexican used cars, stated they were very happy with their Nissan Xterra. I tried searching for it here without success. I am hoping that either someone knows the person with that Xterra or the person themselves will see this post. I am wondering about the cost of insurance in Mexico for a Mexican plated Xterra. I am contemplating buying a 2007 model for Jimena to get around in and I am completely unfamiliar with cost here in not only insurance for the car but also the costs of license, permits and so on. I live in the State of Queretaro. I am also wondering if I can maybe include that Mexican plated car along with my American plated car on my USA purchased Mexican insurance company.

Any Thoughts?

Your US plated car has a "Tourist Policy." Your Mexican plated car will have it's own policy. The only way to learn the cost of insurance is to call or email your insurance agent. Insurance rates vary according to where you live.

Thanks for the reply David. I just got off the phone with my U>s. Inscompany that sells MExican auto insurance and he tells me his company is only allowed to sell insurance to American plated and registered cars, not allowed to combine the cars. Oh well . . . . . . never ask .. . . . . . never know. Thanks agan for the reply. I wish I could remember who owned that Toyta Xterra. I am thinking it may have been Esperanza.

Don't think so - I think she had one one of those "rolling pop cans", Chevy Aveo?

Perhaps you were thinking of Hound Dog and his 2004 Nissan XTrail

Hi Kimpatsu,

You are probably correct now that I think about it. How expensive is MExican car insurance here anyway for Mexican plated cars? I know it will vary from state to state, but approximately. What about the plate for the car? Are they expensive also? I have heard some horror stories from sonme states.

Hello all,

I had a Mexican plated car for several years. I found the Liability and Legal representation policy very reasonable and contrary to what some people have said here it seemed to be the same for every state in Mexico. The rates seem to be governed by federal law, not by state law.

Also, yes, I found the licensing to be very expensive. All because of the Tenencia which applies to any car less than ten years old. This does seem to vary from state to state and really adds to the cost of licensing. Be sure and check it out. I would recommend, that if you buy, you try to buy an older car in good condition, if possible.

I remember my car as being a 2006 Dodge Caravan, which the title people had mistakenly listed as a Grand Caravan, which of course added considerably to the tenencias. I could never get that changed.

I am resident in Zacatecas state.

As ever, jerezano

"Chevy Aveo?"

It was an Atos. But that was at least 5 years ago. She's probably driving an Escalade by now. ;>)

I was just looking at a 2011 Escalade Hybrid at the mall today. $74,995 sticker price. Wow.

The tenencia is coming to an end at the end of 2011 (at least at the federal level).

From El Universal:

"El presidente Felipe Calderón firmó un decreto para que quienes compren un auto nuevo no paguen el impuesto de la tenencia.

El Presidente informó que las personas físicas que adquieran nuevos automóviles con un valor de hasta 250 mil pesos no pagarán la tenencia, que se eliminará completamente el 31 de diciembre de 2011."

That statement clearly refers new cars. I thought the tenencia for all cars was to last until the end of 2011.

That's what the second part says: "que se eliminará completamente el 31 de diciembre de 2011."
