Import Limit for DVDs and CDs

Can't Post | Private Reply
I know I've seen this information on Mexconnect before, but my searches aren't finding anything.

Is there a limit on the number of CDs and DVDs you can bring into Mexico? How many can we bring? We are only coming for a couple of weeks, so we won't be bringing many. But sometimes these limits can be nonsensically low. Does anybody know what the limits are?

AAA Book says that as a tourist you can only bring in 20 cd's. It didn't say anything about DVD's.

Yes 20 CDs is what I remember seeing on the back of paperwork when flying into Mexico. I assume and its probably dangerous to assume, that be it a CD or a DVD you should be alright as long as there are less than a total of 20.

Hovever, I've traveled with less than ten of both for years over US, Mex, and Canadian borders, and I don't ever remember anyone counting to see how many I had. Or paying any attention to them. They sure looked closely at my electronic gear though.

Yes, when I visited last year, they never asked to see them either.

So what happens if they decide you are over "their Limit?"

Do they take & keep the over the top ones?

Are there lockers (like airports) at the auto border crossings where you can store things not allowed until you return home?

The limit is 20 CDs, 5 DVDs, and 5 laser disks. If you bring more than what is allowed, you may be required to pay duty on them.

There are no lockers at the border.

The 'limits' are for duty-free entry. If you have too many, they may charge you a duty. They only confiscate forbidden items -- like certain food things, etc.

Ah, but my DVDs are "Back-Up" DVDs make from the originals. The originals never leave home.

I use the back-ups for travel, visiting other homes, etc. I probably have 50+.

How do you think they would classify these?

It's entirely possible that they would classify these as 'piraterķa' (pirated) and you would be faced with heavy fines and/or imprisonment.

And it's entirely possible that you'd never be asked about CDs or DVDs.

The most secure way to travel into any other country is to follow the laws of that country. Otherwise you leave yourself open to trouble. What's the point of that?
