The "Tiajuana" River flows through the city of "Tijuana". It's been that way since the 50's when I moved to So. Cal.

.......that has me confused.

quote:

The Name
There are different views on the origin of the name for the town. One belief is that it came from an ancient Indian word, "Tiguan", meaning "close to the water." Another view holds that the name came from a ranch, Tia Juana’s (Aunt Jane’s) Ranch, owned by the Allegro Family. The Allegro Family partitioned the ranch into various family decided to divide the ranch into sections of a city grid in the Tia Juana Valley.

Thanks UJ. I was positive that I'd heard it that way when I was a kid, but.......that was a looong time ago and my memory could have been faulty. Then of course there's the Kingston Trio's "Tiajuana Jail!" And the song "Tiajuana Taxi."

The above is a direct quote from one of several Tijuana, Baja California, government websites. Here's the translation:

Tijuana...founded in 1889 as "Zaragoza City", the name of the largest city on the peninsula of Baja California was changed to "Tijuana" in 1929. Tijuana is the fourth largest city in Mexico and is the most-visited in the world.

If you look closely at the websites and postcards that have been previously cited, you will see that the place called "Tia Juana" is allegedly located in California, not in Mexico. Most of the erroneous citations that Tijuana was at one time called "Tia Juana" are from English-speaking sources, including the Kingston Trio. In their famous "Tia Juana Jail" song, the city was called that for flow of words, not for accuracy.

Of course there's the minor detail that Herb Alpert spelled both his band name (the Tijuana Brass) and the song (Tijuana Taxi) "Tijuana"....

Back when I was growing up in SoCal, also in the last ice age, it was commonly (and incorrectly) pronounced as Tia Juana. I remember being sort of surprised when I discovered how it was spelled.

Jonna, with nieces and nephews who call me tia Juana
