I've driven a VW bus into an active hurricane. I've waded through knee-deep storm surge on major urban streets. I suggest that you definitely pay attention to hurricanes, but you have to realize that it is usually -- not always, but usually -- the water, not the wind, that does the damage. The biggest Atlantic Hurricane in five years is headed toward North Carolina at the moment. It has declined to a mere 125 mph storm so far -- but then again, its predecessor, MItch, was barely a hurricane by the time it hit land. It killed thousands. AT this moment, tens if not hundreds of thousands of Mexicans are evacuated from their homes in the Bajio region of Guanajuato, Queretaro, etc., due to flooding caused by a rainstorm. A few years ago, a tropical depression on the Atlantic ridge killed many people as hillsides collapsed, etc., in towns such as Teziutlan. Then again, I'm 50 years old as of Tuesday and have lived all but a few months of my life in serious earthquake country. A storm is easy, easy, easy to prepare for, in comparison. And Sept. 11 has taught us -- may their souls, as I am sure they are, be damned to the most Satanic corners of hell -- that not all risks are natural.
