Cynthia, in my previous reply, I was on a bus from Mexico City, writing on an iPod, so my answer was brief. We stayed in the Gillow several years ago. The location is very central, and the prices are similar to those of the Hotel Catedral. However, the room we had at the time seemed a lot older and worn than those we've had in the Htl Catedral. To be fair, the Gillow was upgrading an entire floor of rooms at the time of our visit. The Hotel Canadá is kind of cute, narrow and vertical. However, the rooms are small and the one we had had windows giving onto two noisy streets. While it's an acceptable hotel, I wouldn't return. The value received is not enough for the price paid. There was a breakfast option, at a small additional cost, and it was a nice breakfast, served in the uppermost floor dining room. But there's no lack of restaurants and cafes close by from which to choose, if you want to eat out. We only peeked into the lobby of the Hotel Rioja, almost next door to the Canadá, on 5 de Mayo. It looked nice for a lower budget hotel. A friend of ours stayed there and said it was fine. For years, beginning in 1992, we stayed at the Hotel Montecarlo, Calle República de Uruguay # 69, about 3 blocks south of the Zócalo. It's lower budget, but clean, although the comforts vary considerably. The beds and pillows are very firm. The bathrooms are all variations on multitasking environments. ;-) The lobby is impressively old fashioned. The building used to be an Augustinian monastery. There's a narrow elevator to all floors, as well as a grand, sweeping staircase to the primer piso. The front rooms are high ceilinged, with tall shuttered windows, but from Thursday through Saturday nights, there was horrendous noise from a disco across the street. The back rooms of the hotel didn't have that problem, but they are smaller, and many have no windows, just a ventilator or a window of an airshaft. There are some more modern hotels, some at bargain prices, but less centrally located in reference to the Zócalo. Info on request. Buen viaje, Anonimo
