Hotel Gillow, a sister hotel to the Htl Catedral, Calle Isabel la Catolica at Av 5 de Mayo.

Also close by; Hotel Canada on 5 de Mayo.

Hotel Rioja is next door and is cheaper.

We just stayed 3 nights at Htl Embassy,
Calle Puebla 115, Col Roma Norte, close to Metro Insurgentes. Good rooms at $300MN a night.

Cynthia, in my previous reply, I was on a bus from Mexico City, writing on an iPod, so my answer was brief.

We stayed in the Gillow several years ago. The location is very central, and the prices are similar to those of the Hotel Catedral. However, the room we had at the time seemed a lot older and worn than those we've had in the Htl Catedral. To be fair, the Gillow was upgrading an entire floor of rooms at the time of our visit.

The Hotel Canadá is kind of cute, narrow and vertical. However, the rooms are small and the one we had had windows giving onto two noisy streets. While it's an acceptable hotel, I wouldn't return. The value received is not enough for the price paid. There was a breakfast option, at a small additional cost, and it was a nice breakfast, served in the uppermost floor dining room. But there's no lack of restaurants and cafes close by from which to choose, if you want to eat out.

We only peeked into the lobby of the Hotel Rioja, almost next door to the Canadá, on 5 de Mayo. It looked nice for a lower budget hotel. A friend of ours stayed there and said it was fine.

For years, beginning in 1992, we stayed at the Hotel Montecarlo, Calle República de Uruguay # 69, about 3 blocks south of the Zócalo. It's lower budget, but clean, although the comforts vary considerably. The beds and pillows are very firm. The bathrooms are all variations on multitasking environments. ;-) The lobby is impressively old fashioned. The building used to be an Augustinian monastery.
There's a narrow elevator to all floors, as well as a grand, sweeping staircase to the primer piso.

The front rooms are high ceilinged, with tall shuttered windows, but from Thursday through Saturday nights, there was horrendous noise from a disco across the street. The back rooms of the hotel didn't have that problem, but they are smaller, and many have no windows, just a ventilator or a window of an airshaft.

There are some more modern hotels, some at bargain prices, but less centrally located in reference to the Zócalo. Info on request.

Buen viaje,

It's been awhile but I found the Hotel Majestic (Best Western) on the Zocalo ideal.

Note that the OP asked for inexpensive hotels. A single or double room at the Majestic costs $120 USD, plus taxes.

Inflation!

In fact, I don't consider the Hotel Catedral nor the Gillow to be inexpensive. To me, the break point from moderate to expensive is about $600 pesos. "Budget" hotels cost less than around $300 MN, IMO.

Four years ago I spent a night in Hotel Pontevedra, Insurgentes North 226, Col. Maria Santa Ribera, Cuahtémoc, D.F. 06400. Cost at the time was 200 pesos (plus pet fee because I had my two cats with me). The room was fine, with a huge comfy bed, and hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful. There's a small, friendly restaurant/lounge inside the building.

That's Colonia Santa María la Ribera, north of Mexico City's Historic Center. The hotel looks great and the prices are certainly excellent. Parts of the colonia are a little dicey and there's really nothing there for tourists, but it is home to Parque Alameda Norte with its beautiful Moorish kiosko.

There was a recent discussion on the Lonelyplanet.com Thorn Tree Mexico Branch about hotels in that area.

El Museo del Chopo is also in the area. On La Ribera San Cosme is the venerable seafood restaurant, Boca del Río.

Here's a site describing the Hotel Pontevedra http://tinyurl.com/3lgardo.
Doesn't seem very central, but then, neither is the Hotel Embassy in terms ofbeing in or near the Centro Hstórico.

Thanks for the correction (fixed). I arrived at Pontevedra after dark and had a flight out the next morning, so I didn't really see anything but the hotel. Forgot to mention that my room was a single, smaller than those in the photos but perfectly fine.

I see from Anónimo's link that the hotel doesn't accept pets. At the time, they were pretty startled when I turned up with my cats, but I had a confirmed reservation for all of us from American Express. Possibly a mistake, but they honored the confirmation. AmEx had shown an extra charge equal to the room rate for each cat, but the front desk manager said that didn't seem fair and charged me for only one. Nice folks.

Thank you so much... this looks like a wonderful hotel and I will put it at the top of my list from now on...
I do want to mention that because of my hurry, I made a reservation at Canada Hotel.... but then went online and researched guests' comments... and that is a hotel I would not want to stay at.... people reported thefts from backpacks and even from a room safe!!!
So I will not stay there and recommend anyone considering it, look up tripadvisor comments first....
I have gone ahead and booked a more expensive hotel for now as the coming weekend is very busy in DF... I learned my lesson... don't wait too long.... but now thanks to input from you folks I have a list of great places to stay next time... and I won't wait until the last minute to make a reservation!!!
Best wishes,
Cynthia R.

Hi Anonimo,
The first pass-through... because it was a busy weekend and I had waited until the last minute, I stayed at the Holiday Inn on the Zocalo, thinking I'd at least enjoy a good meal on the terrace overlooking the Zocolo... the wait was long and I was tired, so I ended up eating inside, not the buffet, and the meal was disappointing....room comfy... about 100 USD...
Last night on my return trip I stayed at the Cathedral Hotel.. the rates there are going up as they are renovating... I got a room with king bed and jacuzzi tub!!! too bad I was too tired to use it... for 590 pesos.... tho the clerk said it would usually rent for more.... most comfy... I like that hotel a lot...they have a new water filtration system built in so you can fill your glass from a special tap in the bathroom and drink away!!!
not sure where the rates will settle but the hotel as a Great bargain is probably no longer....though still not pricey....
Best,
Cynthia R.

Sounds like you got a good deal at the Hotel Catedral. The filtered water taps have been in place for a number of years. I had to make a leap of faith to drink from those. All was well, fortunately.

Sometimes it's more sensible to eat in the hotel when fatigue has set in, although usually, the results are disappointing compared to finding some temple of gastronomy away from the hotel. We found that out a few years ago when we had our comida in the Hotel Catedral. Not bad, but nothing special, and overpriced.

Something similar happened to us 2 weeks ago. We wanted to go to a recommended Korean restaurant in the Zona Rosa, but as we were tired, we ate closer to our hotel. It was pretty good, anyway.
