History of the Interamerican Highway - Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi there
I'm working on a documentary about the history of the Pan-Am or Interamerican Highway. There isn't a great deal on the internet, so I was hoping someone out there might know of a good information, perhaps a local historian who might be able to help? I'm particularly intersted in the stretch of the Pan-Am that goes South from Mexico City to the border to Guatemala. And also the stretch the goes through Guatemala.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction, I'd be really grateful.
Best wishes
Jess

Are you capable of searching in Spanish on Google using (historia del carretera interamericana (+ guatemala or mexico), or historia del carretera panamericana)

One source would be the annual Presidential addresses to the MX congress where the President tells his plans and budgets. Here's one source for those:

The Mexico portion was built in pieces, and without US aid to do so.

Here is a map of the route from Laredo to Panama showing point to point cities:

As GringoCarlos mentions, Google in Spanish brings up a ton of information. I searched "Carretera Panaméricana" and was inundated with info. Have fun!

I traveled part of the Pan-Am highway on the way to Guatemala in 1957,
had to put the car on a railroad flatcar in Tehuantepec and over night to
Tapachula. The railroad had to be used because 34 bridges had not been
built yet, quite an adventure for a 10 year old...

And remember that Google will allow you to translate many of those articles, although sometimes the translations can leave one a bit puzzled. Download Google Chrome for free, and it will translate ALL Spanish language websites.
