676 arrested, tons of drugs seized in U.S. bust of Mexican cartels

By the CNN Wire Staff February 26, 2011
(CNN) -- U.S. law enforcement seized thousands of pounds of drugs and arrested hundreds of people in a synchronized bust targeting Mexican drug cartels and their associates, federal authorities said Friday.

The sweep involved several local, state and federal agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a statement from that organization.

Together, they arrested 676 people and seized more than $12 million, 282 weapons and 94 vehicles around the United States. In addition, nearly 40,000 pounds of marijuana, 467 kilograms of cocaine, 64 pounds of methamphetamine and 21 pounds of heroin were captured in the operation, the statement said.

By some news reports, this very large operation was in retaliation to the murder of the ICE Agent. Really have to wonder if that was the entire motivation behind pulling the trigger to show the US public that they were doing something or if it had been planned for some time and maybe the schedule was accelerated? In my estimation, we tend to concentrate on the big splash raids and then sit on our hands for too long allowing business to return to the norm which new players!

I've seen several reports that many of the suspects were already being investigated so there would probably have been a sweep eventually but to show a forceful timely response they called in the chips now.

Yet another pissing contest. Or better yet, "our *ahem* is bigger than your *ahem*". Tiresome and pointless.

I have been under the impression that in cases concerning drug dealing, terrorism, etc., that the authorities frequently monitor a suspect, (phone calls, emails, travels, etc.), sometimes for an extended period as long as there is little risk of a major incident, in an attempt to discover other members of the network, gather evidence, discover methodology, etc. and then "pull the trigger" on the group when the decision is made, possibly on some rather arbitrary basis as to make a point to somebody or the media or the public or possibly whenever little else is to be gained, probably not the case here.
