Getting Married in Mexico

My niece and her boyfriend are going for a vacation to Mexico and want to get married there. How difficult would this be? What legal requirements are involved?

Each state has its own requirements. A marriage between two foreigners isn't that difficult, but the duo should be prepared for some paperwork requirements and a waiting period.

Two friends who live in San Miguel (with one fluent in Spanish) found the hassles to be overwhelming--thay went to Florida to get married instead. But another friend just went to a gringo wedding in Cancun--so it is possible. Good luck.

Good luck to you, too, jennifer--but it was originally intended for the novios, of course.

I just reread Jennifers previous article (the link in her message above). How true. The paperwork CAN be quite frightening and having a planner and/or the legal translator clearing the path for you, one that has previously dealt with the Official conducting the ceremony is VERY important.

Here in Mazatlan, the presiding official seems to set the SAME appointment time for couples marrying on any given afternoon. Our ceremony was set for 1 pm, along with about 6 other couples. The place was pandemonium with the various witnesses required, and of course all the family members. Fortunately we were tipped off and arrived about noon, gaining first place in the growing line. More documentation (other than the briefcase load we had prearranged) needed to be typed up and signed by several people, not including the Official waiting inside her chamber with yet more paperwork.

It was a lengthy ceremony since there was the legal requirement for it to be translated into English. (The content of the vows was interesting too but I don't know that it would be the same in a ceremony for two foreigners). Then more signatures from a whole lot of witnesses and relatives, thumb prints, photos etc.

Yes, it could be considered a hassle if you aren't prepared for it and may be far from the romantic wedding ceremony you had in mind, or have seen in the travel brochures.

I suppose like back up NOB it depends on the state. My daughter and son-in-law got married in Acapulco 6 years ago. We had checked with the local authorities beforehand and knew it could be done relatively easily and quickly. The details escape me now (6 years is a long time for someone who can't remember remember where he left his glasses) but I do know that we all arrived on a Monday morning and went to the Registro Civil to get the license. They got married on Thursday afternoon. So whatever waiting period there was would have been 72 hours or less. Marriage was done at the hotel by a local judge (got a list of potential people to do the ceremony from the registro civil people, iirc).

It was romantic, except for the hurricane that blew in the day of the wedding. Didn't seem to upset the proceedings.
