Hi newbie,
Most people who take the Copper Canyon Tour spend a night in Creel. The train tour of the Canyon was awesome.
Interesting little museum in town.

What shocked me in my next morning stroll was that there was a delivery truck pulling up in front of one of the big tourist shops with crates of goods showing they came from China. Very disillusioning. I'm sorry to see that Chinese goods are taking the place of Mexican made crafts.

I have heard that there is a serious narco problem in the Copper Canyon area these days. Is that true?

Hello,
Thanks for responding to my post. What you have witnessed concerning goods from China is true. This market is to the "town Indians" that work the tourists. They buy the cheap items and sell them along with the locally made baskets and wood items. Another sad site is that the Indian mothers use their children to beg from the tourists. The government gives them money to send their children to school to pay for uniforms, books etc, but very few go to school in Creel. Dont judge the true Tarahumara that live in the mountains and canyons by the ones in the towns. We work closely with the ones who live in the mountains, they would never beg from you being such a proud and honorable people. They want to work for what they receive. We have started sewing classes and other workshops in the villages and buy the items they make to sponsor the feeding programs and water projects we are doing in the commuities. It's the old "teach a man to fish" philosophy.
You also mentioned the drug problem. Yes, there have been several incidents here with killings. There is always rival confrontations between groups, the military and police. We try not to ask too many questions or be conspicuous concerning this matter if you know what I mean. There are still plenty of tourists coming though.
