Foreign plated car with an FM-2 or imigrante status

Can't Post | Private Reply
If I change from an FM-3 to an FM-2 or to imigrante status do I have to purchase a Mexican plated car?

Can I convert my current 6 year old US plated car to Mexican plates or must I purchase another car in Mexico?

Is now possible to inport a 1 or 2 year car to Mexico if you are a Mexican citizen?

What are the necessary steps to change from and FM-3 to an FM-2 and then to imigrante status and how long does it take?

No. No one will force you to purchase a Mexican-plated vehicle.

Yes, if you're willing to pay the import tax. Your immigration status is immaterial in this regard.

Citizenship isn't the criterion.

Make an application to INAMI for a change of status from FM-3 ro FM-2. The process is explained on INAMI's website, http://www.inami.gob.mx. There is a higher income requirement for a rentista under the FM-2. After five years as an FM-2, you will be eligible to apply for inmigrado status.

Under the FM-2, you have the same privileges to temporarily import a foreign-plated car as you did under the FM-3. After you have attained inmigrado status, that privilege comes to an end.
