That's a Spanish movie, a gem by the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar.

It's hard to pick favorites, but two Mexican works of fiction I love, and have read more than once, are both by Carlos Fuentes: La muerte de Artemio Cruz (The Death of Artemio Cruz) and El Naranjo (The Orange Tree).

Food: pavo con mole

Books about Mexico: my own, of course! Also, Thomas Gage, The English-American (1648), the first travel guide to Mexico (written by a renegade monk turned Puritan, and adviser to Cromwell): Carlos Monsivais Apocalipstick (THE best book on contemporary Mexican culture bar none); too many others to mention.

Movies: Juarez! (the 1938 MGM extravaganza -- Bette Davis as Carlota sets the standard for wacko); Rio Escondito (1948... Indio Fernandez' shameless propaganda for Mexican education, with Maria Felix as the new schoolma'rm in town) and -- of course -- that unforgettable 1972 epic, Santo vs the Werewolf Women of Zacatecas.

Getaways: Veracruz... where good Latin Americans go to be bad.

Songs: Molotov: No dime gringo, pinche frijolero

Scenic drives: Espina del diablo (Durango to Mazatlan)... as long as I leave the driving to someone else

Town: Mexico D.F., followed way behind by Tehuanatepec, Oaxaca.

Handmade items: Handcrafted wooden furniture (dresser drawers, end tables, beds and dining room tables/chairs specifically).
I also like small, handmade wooden boxes that children often give me to keep my paperclips or jewelry in for safekeeping. I have so many of various designs form various regions of Mexico.

I guess Rich didn't see your post, so, since I'm his publisher, I'll answer your question. The book is, Gods, Gachupines and Gringos: A People's History of México by Richard Grabman.

And I'll give Rich (and myself) a little pat on the back, as for several months now, at least on Amazon.com (both as a book and as a Kindle ebook) it has been the best selling complete history of México in English. It is a really, really good book, an enjoyable read. Not the dry, dusty sort or history book you usually see.

Book: The Life and Times of Mexico, by Earl Shorris
Food: fish taco and birria on the highway and Chilis en Nogadas
Movies: Once upon a time in Mexico, Apocalypto
Town: Guanajuato and all the fabulousness of it and for the hippie I never was Sayulita
Getaway: my yard, the front of grass the back with pool and patio
Songs: Jalisco, Chapala and Mariachi in general

Especially like: time moves only as fast as I want it to
dogs roam and are not ususally aggressive
children play with vigor and imagination
being polite and pleasant is a lifestyle
there is always something to see when driving
the small stuff gets a whole lot smaller here
industriousness and self-sufficiency are alive and well here

I like everything you guys said and one more. I love the fact that everybody goes to the plaza at night. I was afraid that, as technology came to the average guy, more folks would stay home and ruin that sense of community but I was wrong. Communities are providing wifi on the zocalo in Merida (for example) so everybody still shows up. So I still get to sit there for free and watch the show: kids playing, old folks chatting, lovers strolling, plenty of ice cream and other treats, mariachis playing. Pura vida.
