FM3 car problem

Can't Post |
,Dear all, I hope all is well . sorry to bother you, but I've been trying to get answers to my particular problem without success, and worse, I'm running out of money just trying to call the American Embassy, aduanas, and other places trying to get help. So, if you could help, here's the story: My main problem is that I have my car here with me. I am here in Tlaxcala, on an FM3 student visa; I realize my car is covered as long as my FM3 is current. Now the visa runs out on September 27th. So I want to get an FM3 work visa, and I have the letter of the job offer from the U of Tlaxcala, but I went to migracion and they said I'd have to leave the country and return with a tourist visa -then they could put in my FM3 work application. The real drag is that I know that people have changed their FM3's charcteristic in Puebla without leaving the country, but Tlaxcala wants to follow the letter of the law, oh well. Well I'd like to avoid driving out of the country if possible, so could I just take a bus out (to Guate, for example), leaving my car parked in Tlaxcala, return with the tourist visa, start the application process, AND still be able to use my car while I waited for the FM3 work visa, OR do I have to drive it out with me if I intend to use my car during the monthlong visa process?... I've heard (everyone says something different!) that if I was stopped during the FM3 process, as the car is now -long expired - that they could take it away from me. AS you can see the issue is having the use of my car while I'm changing over to a work FM3. Anyway, see, I can barely explain the situation. Please advise. hank you antemano any info you can offer, p

Your car registration status must match your visa status. Right now you have an FM3 and your car's registration paper will have FM3 written on it. That registration is valid only as long as your FM3 is valid. You will need to drive to the border, turn in the registration paper, and let them scrape the sticker off the windshield. Once you have done that, drive across the border, turn around and come back. Get your FMT and a new car registration.

Later, when your FMT is converted to an FM3 with work permit, you can get your car registration changed to your new status without having to go back to the border.

so I can't just take a bus out of the country, I'll have to take the car out? I was afraid of that... Hey Rolly, in that case, I'm going to drive down to Tapachula and cross over there into some Guatemalan town. Well my question is, do you think it's safer to drive from Puebla to Oaxaca and then Rt. 19o (oaxaca to Santo Domingo Tehuantepec) to Rt. 200 then all the way to Tapachula, OR, do you think it wiser to drive up north instead through Cordoba to Minatitlan (near Coatzacoalcos) and then cross downward toTuxtla Gutierrez, etc....?? I'm just wondering about safety -I've never driven much outside of Puebla y Tlaxcala. Please advise, peter

My sense is that you're obligated to remove your car from the Mexican Republic prior to the expiration of the underlying visa. Re-enter under an FMT, and proceed with your new FM-3 application. Whoops, that's what INAMI in Tlaxcala has already told you.
