FM2 And Passport Information

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi again,

I have been asked by my Immigration Attorney to send to her a copy of every page in my passport for the Mexican Government Immigration Office . . . . I have never heard of such a thing. Can any one enlighten me about this? She brought the passport for them to see the first time and they returned it to her and she gave it to me. Why now asking for copies of every page of my passport? . . . . Anyone else had this expierence?

Robert

In April I converted from an FM3 to an FM2. It was renewal time for me anyway.

I was asked for copies of every page in my passport and the old FM3, as well as all the usual financial documentation, bank statements. And I provided copies of my house ownership papers, as well as copies of the paid real estate tax receipts.

I paid the two fees for the renewal at the nearest bank. I don't remember now why there are two, but there are. And took the receipts for the paid fees from the bank to the INS, but first I made copies of them.

I know the standard of living of the guy where I get my copying done depends on me. (humor)

A month later, when the FM2 was to be ready, I went back, and was told it would be ready the next day.

I went back the next day and now they said I had not paid the fees. I produced my copies. They made copies of my copies and told me to come back next day.

Went back next day, and now they said the front page of the application, the FM1 I believe, was missing. I did not have a copy of that, but reasoned with them, why would they have accepted my application on day one without the front page? That was all to no avail, but prompted the nice lady to help me fill out a new one, on the spot. And, come back next day.

Next day I went back, and the FM2 was ready.

Just do whatever they tell you to do. But after you make copies of all the pages of all your documents for them, be sure to make copies of all receipts for fees paid, and the application. That might be a little tricky, as they might not want to let you remove the application and all the supporting documents to go get them all copied. That is why I did not have a copy of the front page of my application to show them when mine went missing.

I certainly hope it is true that after four years of renewals with the FM2 I won't have to go through these renewals. That is why I switched from the FM3 to FM2. I cannot envision myself, in my old, old age, running all over this place every year in 100'F+ weather, jumping through all their hoops.

My lawyer renews my fm2 every year with just a bank statement and my fm2. He has contacts at immigration though. Again, local offices vary in what is required apparently. I do know that when you choose to apply for citizenship they want copies of all pages of your passport.

What do lawyers charge for renewing FM-3's and FM-2's?

Robert, this request is standard for Mexican Immigration. Just go with the flow and don't stress out. You'll feel better.

If you have a scanner, scan your passport into your computer (or on a disk) and you can print out a complete copy easily. You will need the entire document copied every year when you renew your FM3 or FM2--at least that is so in the offices of the Instituto Nacional de Migración in the state of Guanajuato.

No scanner, digital camera works just as well.

The "copy of every page of the passport" thing really is standard. I had to provide same a few weeks ago when I got my driver's license. Anyway.....this thread made me giggle and reminded me of something.

We moved down here a little over a year and a half ago. Our house in the U.S. sold far more quickly than we expected and we were thrown into a mad rush packing and giving away stuff and throwing other stuff out. Friends were coming over, picking over things, etc. I pointed to my ancient computer printer.....which was also one of the first-ever all-in-one machines so it works as a copier, too.

I gave it away.

Two days later - in a spasm of realization - I grabbed it back.

Can you imagine? Giving away your own personal copy machine right before you move to Mexico??? It's gotten more work in the last year and a half than it did during its first ten years. Yes, it's very old. Pray for its continued good health.

ROTFL ... one of my first purchases here was an all-in-one. Good thing it's an HP, because I'm killing it!! Seriously, I do patronize my neighborhood copy shops occasionally for the tough stuff (e.g. fideicomiso), but there is nothing like doing it in one's jammies. Imagine, I had extra pages added to my passport just before moving here, so copying it is actually painful without anaesthesia, if you get my drift. ;-)

So right, Esperanza. When your passport, etc. is stamped, the agents don't look for the next space. They stamp anywhere in the book. Every page assures that you have not been coming and going, or tracks where you have been going.

I've always done the applications and renewals myself. Our INM office (La Paz, BCS) is pretty user-friendly. I've heard of people paying up to $150 US to have an agent handle the procedure, but that's probabaly extreme. No one I know uses a lawyer, although people who don't know Spanish sometimes get friends to help them.

I have also always done my visa application/renewals myself--even 10 years ago when my Spanish was minimal. To me it seemed important to get used to some of the bureaucracy here since I planned on staying in Mexico the rest of my life. I have almost always found the INM people to be helpful.

You obviously do not have much experience with the Mexican bureaucracy. We have been giving a copy of every page of the passport as well as the FM3· and later FM2 every single year. Better get used to it.
Passports get stamped all over the place so the best way to know where you have been is to get a copy of all the pages..no big deal.
