FM-3 for Household Goods and Address

Can't Post | Private Reply
Recently, I went to the Consulate office in Omaha, Nebraska to try to get some questions answered on the FM-3 process. One of the problems I came up with is the Consulates requirement that I provide an exact address where I am moving to in Mexico with the household goods listed on my casa de menja..

My plans were to move to Chapala, Mexico (moving by cargo van) and to place my goods in storage in Ajijic (checked on this and storage facilities are available) and then proceed immediately to Oaxaca, Mexico to enroll in a one month Spanish language School. (My Spanish is very weak). The reasons for this is so that I can communicate well enough in Chapala to purchase a home and live there amoung my new Mexican neighbors.

Since I will not be immediately purchasing a home but will actually be in Oaxaca with my household items in Ajijic and finding a place to stay (rent) in Oaxaca after arriving, how can I satisfy the Consulates requirement of an exact address?

Ask the storage company if you can use their address. After all, that is where your belongings are going. No one is going to go to the address to check that you are really there -- it's just paperwork.

Remember, you have 30 days from the time you cross the border to register with the INM. If you change your address after you register, you must go back to the INM and make a change of address.

You cannot "learn" Spanish in 30 days. You probably don't need Spanish to make a house purchase in Chapala--English should do fine.

Amen.

All real estate dealings with foreigners here at Lake Chapala are transacted in English, from the search for the house to closing. The huge majority of real estate agents are from the USA or Canada.

However: rent first, for at least six months (a year is better), until you know the area thoroughly and have a good idea which neighborhood or town you like the best. There is way too much that's unexpected here to buy right away. To paraphrase an old saw: buy in haste, repent at leisure. It happens every day.

C'mon down and learn the area while you're learning Spanish. There are great Spanish teachers right here at the lake. PM me if you want a name or two.
