Does Marshall D. Dawg need Health Cert.

My vet's office says that the health certificate is only necessary when flying into Mexico. Does my dog (Marshall D. Dawg) need a cert if we are driving to Monterrey??

We've never been asked at the border for one but Mexican law says you have to have an International Health Certificate, issued within 72 hours of your border crossing. Your cute dog looks like a Shih Tzu, which is what we have, too. He's worth the extra effort to make him totally legal, just in case there's a crackdown that week.

Thank you, Carol. Marshall D. is a cousin lhasa apso. We will look for a vet in Laredo before we cross just to make sure.

We just got a chihuahua mix, mixed with what I don't know, but he's tiny, white, with floppy ears. I wanted to name him "Ay" as in "Ay Chihuahua", but my wife would have none of that. So his name is Bombom, as in marshmallow.

We live in Mexico and travel back and forth a fair amount, driving. We almost always get a health certificate for both of our 'callejeras'. We always carry their health files with the vacination records. NEVER been asked for the papers on either side of the border.

That said, I wouldn't want to be the test case.

We currently have a rat terrier and a Pomeranian. Each little girl tries to out-do the other in the "cute" department. We have never had anyone on either side of the border check their documentation either. While we don't get the health certificate, we do keep their shot records (which are shaped like passports) along with our passports just in case. I did read somewhere that an animal that looks "sick" may be pulled over on the US side for a more detailed inspection.

By the way, we have always been pleased with the veterinary care we find in Mexico.

Driving down, we've never been asked to show our pet's papers in either direction, although we've always had them. When flying, however, we did have to show them in Mexico before boarding the plane, and, again, going through Immigration in the U.S.

Only once has it been a minor issue for me. Crossing into the U.S. at Colombia the guy looked at the three flopped out on their custom made doggie flat fitted over the back seat and said "I assume those dogs have their shots." I nodded and offered their shot records and he said "That's O.K." No problem, ever, but do be prepared just in case.

A related question: I plan to backpack thru Mexico and Central America - July to November or so. I have a runty Jack Russell, very calm, who travels well and loves people. I'd love to take him with me. Any advice/suggestions?

Muchas gracias!

Celeste

Several years ago we moved from Chiapas to the northern frontier and we could not take our beloved little dog on first class buses so we had to leave her with friends in Tuxtla Gutierrez. Second class (chicken buses) which run shorter distances and local colectivos then accepted just about any kind of animal from snakes to dogs to turkeys to iguanas, mostly destined to market. We could also transport her short distances in taxis, with perhaps a tip to the driver in case he needed to sweep off the back seat.

As long as you don't want to travel first class, you should have no problems with your terrier. If you are going south beyond Mexico, you might need some kind of health certificate. We have had good luck with veterinarians in Mexico. Don't hesitate to take your companion to one if necessary. Also take care to keep it away from the stray dogs for which many rural areas of Mexico are infamous. It is also very easy to get human food quality raw bones from almost any mercado very cheaply if that is something you like to feed.
