And the best part....the pets don't become teenagers who want to drive the car. Plus no college fund.

Funny you bring up Tzotzil, since I am studying it and I can tell you you are mistaken.

Tzotzil is a language with variations which are not considered dialects.
The dialect is more a Western concept than an indigenous one. You have the King´s English or French and all the regional languages are considered dialects. Dialect are usually oral and have no written form but again I am speaking of the Western concept.
There is no Tzotzil form being considered the one and only correct Tzotzil. The form the most studied is the Tzotzil from Zinacantan thanks to Prof. Robert Laughlin.
I studied with a man from the Chenalho area and I can tell you that there are many differences between villages but not enough to impede the comprehension. The differences are more like the differences between the various areas in the US or Great Britain.
I was corrected when I called the various form of Tzotzil dialects by the people from CELALI. In the Maya area the Mayas had city States very distinct one from the other and they would not hear than one form of language was more correct than another.

I do not pretend to be an expert on indigenous language so I do not know if Nahuatl had dialects but I can tell you you are sorely mistaken about Tzotzil.

True, but my friend had neither a car nor expectations that his eight children would attend college, so I didn't go there!

Another point: once a pet leaves, he's usually gone. Not so for kids: they are like boomerangs. With the economy the way it is we could call this the "boomerang generation." This concept is very acceptable in Mexican homes. Not so much in mine, but I experience it with alarming regularity.

That's one the scares the heck out of me. Geesh!! It was hard enough living with them when they were younger. If they came home to roost I don't know what I'd do.

Thanks for the smile.

"The map shows the regional pattern of Spanish dialects first proposed by Pedro Henríquez Ureña in 1921. Each distinct region has some significant differences in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Many minor differences exist within each region, making it possible for someone with a good ear from Tamaulipas, for example, to easily distinguish between a speaker from Sonora and one from Zacatecas."
This map and brief quote (reproduced here with permission of the authors) are from Rhoda & Burton (in press) Perspectives on the Geography of Mexico.

Brian, the indigenous people of Mexico don't speak dialects. They speak distinct languages such as Purhépecha, Tzotzil, Nahua, Mayan, and many others. A dialect is derived from a mother language; each of the many indigenous languages of Mexico is a mother language.

The following is a quote from the book "Siglo de Caudillos" by Enrique Krauze, noted Mexican historian.and native Spanish speaker:

"...en un país donde se hablaban más de cien lenguas y dialectos indígenas......."

I gave up putting forth my opinion on this thread long ago, so you'll get no further argument for me. Frankly, it doesn't really matter to me.

I remember when I was getting acquainted with some fellows from the San Blas islands in Panama, I remarked something to the effect that "So you have your own language" and they corrected me by saying "no, we don't have a language. We have an idiom (idioma)."
